Ceremonies For the Sabbets
(I didnt create this)
It seems to me that many beginners have no idea as to the basics of spell working, so that they are left to beg for spells making them sound very foolish and amateurish. This is too bad, as they are obviously searching for something. So I thought that some basic guidelines were in order to help quench that initial thirst for knowledge & to hopefully spark an all out quest for the truth of what may work best for each individual. You will find that the more you learn, the more you will crave. So I guess one could think of this as merely the appetizer....
The first thing that must be made perfectly clear is that Wicca, Witchcraft, Druidry, etc. are essentially nature based religions. This is the main focus for it, and its reason for being. Magick is used, but it is of secondary importance. Casting spells is not the end all, be all of these religions. Growing spiritually and becoming better people is the true reason.
The second thing that must be understood is that usually it is easier to do things mundanely rather than try to do magick. Try doing things that way first and save magick for the last resort. 90% of all situations can be handled easier on a physical level, and you have less to worry about backlash-wise. Even when you do magick, you often need to back it up with mundane actions. For example if you do a spell to get a job, you aren't going to get very far if you don't go out and look for one, or send out resumes.
Thirdly there are ethical considerations to consider. Now your average Black Arts practitioner might disagree with me, but I feel that if you are going to exercise power, than it should be done responsibly. Free will is a very important thing for humans and to do a spell that would step on this right is highly unethical. If you do a spell that interferes with a persons free will then you had better have a really good reason to do so. This is why love spells to make a specific person fall in love with you are considered by most to be unethical. You are trying to interfere with a persons free will and to some, that is not a good enough reason. Now a general love spell to bring the right person to you is more accepted/acceptable, as long as you don't mention anyone in particular. Listing the qualities you want will suffice. That way, no one's free will is directly tampered with.
Fourthly, you need to be very specific in what you want. You have to have your goal and intentions firmly in mind before you attempt magic. You cannot afford to be mentally sloppy. I have heard of many people getting weird (or scary) results because they were not specific enough. (Read the short story "The Monkey's Paw" if you still don't quite understand.)
Now, spell casting is essentially the raising of magickal energy, focusing this with intent and then releasing it. That's it. Sounds simple doesn't it? Well that's because it is.....
There are any number of ways to raise magickal energies. Wiccans/pagans/Witches/practitioners of Voudun(Voodoo),Hoodoo,Santeria etc..use dance, chanting, calling upon Deities(Orishas) or the Elements, etc. Ceremonial Magicians usually call upon God names, and are very meticulous in the way they release the energy. But then they are trying to find the science in magick and need all sort of complicated working to find repeatable results. You need energy to drive the spell. It really doesn't matter how you raise the energy, as long as you find a way that works for you. The Gods all have different areas of concern, and thus energy. Each element has a different energy as well, as does each planet. These should be studied before any spell working in order to assure that the right type of energy is being used. For example if you wanted to do a spell to help you study for a test you would want energy specific to that task. You might call upon Hermes, who deals with academic issues rather than Thor who is more into fighting giants and drinking with the boys.
As a side note, the raising of energy is one of the reasons that circles are castin the Wiccan tradition. Circles will keep the summoned energy in one spot until you are ready to release it. So you can effectively raise the energy needed without it bleeding away before you can use it. There are various ways of casting circle. Basically, you want to outline the space you want to use (this is the making of the circle part). You can sprinkle salt around, you can spread a cord or thread around, or just use visualization to "see" a circle forming around you. Most people would argue that the direction you start in is important. Most Wiccans/Witches start in the North. I've heard that since the religion is Earth centered then they would naturally honor the Earth by starting in its direction. By the way the traditional placement of the Elements are Air/East, South/Fire, Water/West, Earth/North. Ceremonialists will start in the East because they are more concerned with Airy aspects and with illumination. The sun rises in the East, so there you have it. I have heard that you could even start the circle in the direction that you are primarily working with. For example if you were doing a spell involving water or with a Deity that is associated with the West, you could start in the West. Once you have the circle cast then you need to cleanse it of any previous energy patterns, which might interfere with your magickal working. There is a fifth element called Spirit that can be seen as a ball of white or violet light. You can visualize this light filling your Circle, cleansing it.
Or you could go to each direction and call upon the elements to cleanse the circle with their energies. Then usually comes the setting up of defenses which is done to keep things from entering in and interfering. This can be done together with the cleansing. In Wicca/Witchcraft this is refered to as Calling Quarters. Again, you would begin at your chosen starting point and call to the powers of that element to enter the circle to aid in your work and to protect you from negative beings. Ceremonialists will use various names of God as well as Archangels for this. Then you would call upon (invoke) the Deities, usually the Goddess first followed by the God to join your circle and asking for their aid. Now you are ready to do your magick, or celebrate your holiday, or whatever. After you are done you must close the circle. Simply reverse the above steps. When dismissing the Deities and elements be very polite. Thank them for their help. Don't order them around as this will offend them. Thank the Deities then the elements. A lot of traditions feel that you should move only clockwise (or deosil: pronounced- Jay-Shil. Its a gaelic word and thus not spelled like it is pronounced) in circle. This is seen as an affirmative and life giving direction while counterclockwise (widdershins) is seen as negative and destructive. I would agree that you should move clockwise during the ritual/spell working. But when closing the circle, I don't see anything wrong with moving counter clockwise, as you are bringing down the circle afterall. So move to the different directions, as you see fit and thank them for their help. Then visualize the circle going away. That's the basics for circle casting from beginning to end. In Voudun,Santeria etc...a simple splashing of holy water etc in the "4 -corners" will sometimes be used or powdered eggshell used in much the same way to encircle the their area of power.
Focusing the energy is simply a way of giving the energy a direction to move into as well as instructions to follow. The typical way of accomplishing this is to use symbols. Symbols are usually simple design that have a lot of meaning attached to them. For example look at the peace symbol and the swastika. Both are fairly simple to draw and both are immediately recognized and are viewed to have strong meanings. Another side note, it is a shame that the swastika was ruined by Hitler in WWII. Historically it as a powerful sun symbol that was associated with the outpouring of energy. It is found from the Native Americans to the Vikings to the Eastern Indians.
Symbols can also be used in the raising of energy as well to insure that the type of energy you want will be collected. Using symbols and even photographs are a way of pointing out the direction and intent that the energy is to follow. Another ethical consideration. You might want to make a comment that you don't want anyone harmed in the process of the spell working. This helps to insure that you don't benefit from another's tragedy or expense.
For example, you want to do a spell to help you with school again. You determined that you want to get the aid of Hermes and Athena (Both deal with academics or wisdom. They are Greek, but you can use any pantheon you want.) and make use of Air, which is associated with learning. Planet wise you could also incorporate Mercury, which has a specific symbol. You might also want to use a photograph of yourself as part of the focus so that you will be incorporated into the magick. You have the type of energy you want and symbols to help focus it. Hopefully you have picked a way to raise energy as well. Once this is done, you need to be able to send the spell on its way.
A physical gesture or movement can be a good way of releasing the spell. Raising and then sharply dropping the hands is a way. Or you could stamp your foot, strike the ground with a wand or staff, make a pushing gesture with the hands, etc. What you need is something that announces specifically, and dramatically, that it is time for the spell to go and do its job. Most of ritual is attempts to reach that inner child inside you where the magic lives. This is also known as the subconscious, the unconscious, the inner child, the lower self, or the younger self. This part is like a two year old and likes to play and is visually stimulated. This is why many magick workers have strange clothing or tool to use. They are really unnecessary, except to get in touch with the younger self.
Once the spell is released many people recommend grounding to get rid of any lingering energy that might be in you. Another consideration is that once the spell is released, forget about it. If you think about the spell you will call it back to you and you will interfere with its mission. If you want to reinforce the spell do another, identical spell at another date. Don't mess with the spell already in progress.
Close down your circle and that's that. I hope I have given the basics so that anyone can construct their own spells, which is really more effective than using someone elses. Other's spells can be a good way for you to compare notes. Research into what thing is associated with what symbol, energy, etc. will still need to be done, but there are plenty of books that can do that, as well as many Pagan/magick sites with such information on the internet that can be of help.

Wicca, or Witchcraft, is an earth religion -- a re-linking (re-ligio) with the life-force of nature, both on this planet and in the stars and space beyond. In city apartments, in suburban backyards, in country glades, groups of women and men meet on the new and full moons (Esbats) and at festival times (Sabbats) to raise energy and put themselves in tune with these natural forces. They honor the old Goddesses and Gods, including the Triple Goddess of the waxing, full, and waning moon, and the Horned God of the sun and animal life, as visualizations of immanent nature.
Our religion is not a series of precepts or beliefs, rather we believe that we each have within ourselves the capacity to reach out and experience the mystery -- that feeling of ineffable oneness with all Life. Those who wish to experience this transcendence must work, and create, and participate in their individual religious lives. For this reason, our congregations, called covens, are small groups which give room for each individual to contribute to the efforts of the group by self-knowledge and creative experimentation within the agreed-upon group structure or tradition.
Not all practisioners are in Covens, Some prefer to follow a Solitary path, sometimes refered to as Solitry Wicca. Most who practice solitary Wicca follow more of an Eclectic path, There are some who still follow the same traits as covens.
There are many traditions or sects within the Craft. Different groups take their inspiration from the pre-Christian religions of certain ethnic groups (e.g. Celtic, Greek, Norse, Finno-Ugric); in the liturgical works of some modern Witch poet or scholar (e.g. Gerald Gardner, Z Budapest, Alex Saunders, Starhawk); or by seeking within themselves for inspiration and direction. Many feminists have turned to Wicca and the role of priestess for healing and strength after the patriarchal oppression and lack of voice for women in the major world religions.
There are many paths to spiritual growth. Wicca is a participatory revelation, a celebratory action leading to greater understand of oneself and the universe. We believe there is much to learn by studying our past, through myth, through ritual drama, through poetry and music, through love and through living in harmony with the Earth.
Remember these are just guides and other peoples thoughts, becoming a wiccan may vary depending on you, you may even already be wiccan without even knowing!
The Craft does not actively seek converts. We do not proselytize. We are willing to inform when asked, and training is available in varying degrees of formality. Some Witches believe that one must be born with the talent to become a Witch. Others believe that all people have the ability, and that becoming a Witch is simply a matter of training. Some people know from an early age that they are Witches; others come to the Craft as adults. Most of us grew up in a tradition other than the Craft.
And there are many out there who do what we would call Witchcraft who have no idea what to call it, or even that there are others like them in the country or the world. Being a Witch, like doing Magick itself, is a matter of symbolism and intent.
How Do I Become A Wiccan?
This is a frequently asked question which is asked, and the honest answer would be there is no "becoming a wiccan", in the sense u wake up one day and decide you are going to be Wiccan. Like all religions its is something you either are brought up with, perhaps if someone in your family is Wiccan, or something you know you want to be part of and you know you are, for example if it feels right for you and you know what you want from it.
Like all religions, you do learn as you live it, with Wicca there are different "slants" to the beliefs as you go from one Wiccan to the next. As you learn you will most probably adopt your own "slant" on your beliefs. There is no right and wrong.
The process of becoming a good Wiccan involves a lot of reading, studying, and developing of your own perspective. It is a religion that encourages independent thought. So by reading some good books, learning about the Craft, then deciding if you’re ready, you can dedicate yourself. The best place to start is to look within yourself.
Sit down and think about what you are trying to achieve, how might be the best way to go about that. Try to figure out what you believe, how you think the world works, why things are the way they are.
Meditate on who you are as a person, and who you want to become. Are you who you want to be? Why or why not? Where do you want to be and why? Only when we understand ourselves can we truly see the world with totally clear vision.
Making the first important step, deciding that this is something you want to look into, all you have to do now is the actual studying part.
A good starting point would be to head to your local book shop or library. Surf the net and find all the information you can; join a newsgroup, check out message boards and chat rooms. Ask a lot of questions, and don't be afraid of looking silly.
Oh spirit guaridian of the North,
Ancient one of the earth,
I call thee to come forth and charge this circle,
with the power of three and rock."
Next face East and say:
"Oh spirit and guardian of the East,
Ancient one of the air,
I call thee to come forth and charge this circle,
With the power of the winds."
Next face the South and say:
"Oh spirit and guardian of the South,
Ancient one of the fire,
I call thee to come forth and charge this circle
With the power of the Flame."
Next face West and say:
"Oh Spirit and guardian of the west,
Ancient one of the water,
I call thee to come forth and charge this circle.
With the power of the tides."
Turn to the North once again and say:
"Charge this circle with your power, Old Ones, for as above, so below."
Channeling has become a popular phenomena in the last several years. We see it featured in News-Magazines and on talk shows. We read articles about it, and bookshelves everywhere now hold volumes of books written by channeled entities, with more appearing every month. Some channeled sources have gained a great deal of notoriety, drawing large crowds for seminars and workshops, often at a steep price.
How can we better understand this sudden outpouring of information? Webster defines "channel" as: " a means of access, a route". In the context of New Age work, channeling provides an access-way through which communication can be achieved between planes of existence. Channeling is a route through which those who are NOT focused in physical reality can give information to those who ARE focused in physical reality.
Though it may seem to be a fairly recent phenomena, channeling in various forms has existed as long as humankind. The most common form of channeling, in fact, is one we all have experienced: That sudden helpful insight that occasionally comes to us from "out of the blue". This form of channeling has created many works of art and has helped us find solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems. Unlike other forms of channeling, this inspiration is always available to us and whether we receive it rarely or often may simply depend on our receptivity and openness.
Dreams are another avenue through which channeled information can reach us. In the dream state we are open and spiritually attuned, creating an un-obstructed gateway through which Universal knowledge can flow. While the dream channel and inspiration are both valid routes of channeling, dreams, for many people, are more easily ignored. We tend to respond to and use those insights which inspire us.
The most spectacular form of channeling is, of course, "Trance Channeling". In this technique, the channel gives up the use of his or her body by entering a trance state, allowing the "source" to speak directly to a third party.
Although most trance channels work with only one source, sources can be a number of things or beings. Many believe that channeled "sources" reflect the channel's subconscious mind or a "collective unconscious".
Channeled material may also flow from one's "Higher Self". Information communicated to us through this Source definitely "counts" as channeled material, for our "Higher Selves" are not focused in physical reality. Others may channel material from the Cosmic Mind or from the God-Goddess-All-That-Is.
Most channeled material, however, comes to us from spirit guides or Masters and, ultimately, it is the material which is important regardless of who or what we believe our source to be.
Another way of communicating with ones "source" is through "Automatic Writing". In this form of channeling, the channel first meditates then sits with a pen and paper or a typewriter and allows the source to write. Meditation should be practiced each time before automatic writing since meditation puts us at peace and makes us more receptive to true spiritual sources.
The technique for automatic writing is fairly simple: After meditating, sit in a comfortable position holding a pad of paper and a pen, resting the point of the pen on the paper. Keep the body relaxed and ask if there is a "source" present. Stay relaxed and just wait for writing to begin.
At first the writing may be unreadable, just fine little scribbles that mean nothing. After some practice, however, the scribbles will become readable words and phrases which allow the source to identify themselves and discuss whatever subject we wish. Success may not be achieved in the first few sessions. It may take time and daily practice to develop a strong connection but it is well worth the effort.
No matter what technique we use to channel our information, it is very important that we not follow blindly. Until we are satisfied with their believability, each of our sources should be regarded with a certain amount of healthy skepticism. We should examine all channeled material with a detached and questioning mind.
Although the material may vary in content, there are certain qualities which will always be present in information which is "channeled" by a true spiritual source. Such information will be positive in outlook and will always direct us toward the spiritual path. Since our sources will always try to help us as much as they can by giving us sound and usable advice, sources who attempt to dazzle us with incomprehensible garbage should be regarded with suspicion. A true source will not lie nor will they gossip. Our guides will not tell us to do things, and they cannot predict the future because the future is always changing.
When we attempt to channel our spirit guides, it is important to keep these points in mind. Non physical entities have "personalities" just as physical ones do. Someone whose attitudes were negative, or depressed, in LIFE, might carry remnants of these qualities into spirit life. Edgar Cayce was once quoted as saying: "The only difference between a LIVE Episcopalian and a DEAD Episcopalian is that one is DEAD and one is ALIVE."
In reality, there is no such thing as communication with the "dead". We tend to see life in physical terms but LIFE is a SPIRITUAL reality which, for us, is presently housed in a physical form.
Though misguided entities can not harm you physically, their influence could produce negative side effects which could make your experience of channeling less fulfilling or pleasant, just as being around ANY negative personality might tend to do. For this reason it is important to establish a secure system of protection and awareness when attempting to channel. Observing and following these giudelines can protect us from the inevitable confusion which results from contact with these misguided "sources".
A certain amount of preparation is also necessary if we hope to be a clear and responsible channel. With this as our goal, it is probably not advisable that we attempt any form of channeling until we have attained some degree of proficiency at meditation.
Meditation makes us more centered and loving. It also acts as a shield against contact with negative spirit personalities. Meditation should be practiced daily, for besides facilitating our ability to channel clearly, it is the most important thing we can do to expand our spiritual lives.
Your spirit guides can become life-long friends and advisors as they have a wonderful outside view of our lives and life in general. They have access to information that we could not otherwise obtain. They help to deepen our understanding of ourselves and help us through our times of crisis. Contacting these spirit friends is not difficult. There is no loss of control of our bodies and nothing to fear for we can quit any time we choose.
Spirit friends, just like our friends in the physical world, should always be treated with respect. They should not be expected to entertain our friends or answer a lot of trivial questions. (If it is important to us, then it is not trivial.) Probably the most serious mistake we can make, however, is to become too dependent on our guides as this is the one thing that will cause us to lose them. Like any true friend, our guides do not want us to count on them too heavily.
The process of channeling our spirit guides is truly a great adventure. It may take weeks or months to develop but it is an amazing process and will bring invaluable results to those who persevere. Good luck and happy channeling.
They say that the longest journey begins with a single step. So, too, the exploration of Magickal studies begins with a single step. Though the first step in a physical journey is often self-evident, the First Step on a Magickal journey is often not quite so clear. While formally organized groups often have a path of lessons to instruct newcomers, the solitary or isolated student is often left standing in perplexity on this broad plain of knowledge, wondering just where in the heck to begin. And wondering, too, if it's "okay" to start just anywhere.
While it's true that studies can begin in any direction that attracts you, the necessary first step must be learning to make psychic shields. There are "Things of the Dark" out there. There are any number of explanations for what these things might be-- ghosts, demons, or simply uncontrolled urges of the subconscious mind. In truth, it doesn't matter what they are. What does matter is that their effect is very real and unless they are put under your control, they will drag you over the borders of sanity into psychosis. You are most vulnerable to them while you're in an "open" trance or meditative state. That's why the wise practitioner always begins by taking steps to define exactly what will be permitted through the portals of their "psychic shields"-- no matter how simple the ritual. And this, in a nutshell, is what "protective magic" is about.
There are a number of ways to do this. The most common is to begin by drawing a circle (around a group or yourself) and invoking the one or more protective powers. Generally, this is done by candlelight, in front of an altar that holds certain magical objects. The circle may be further "secured" and "cleared" by using salt, salt water, rum, incense, or some other method. You may be wearing a special robe and will have taken a bath ( or performed a cleansing ritual) earlier. The powers that protect you will be called on and THEN you will begin your ritual.
Is it psychological? Absolutely! Is there a reason why protection rituals always take this form? Positively! Let's take a step back and see what you're actually doing and how the process works-- from a psychological standpoint-- and how to use this knowledge to help you refine your circles to enhance your rituals.
Psychologists and psychics alike view the mind's structure as a three-part entity: The ego (that which you think of as yourself), the superego (the "higher self") and the Id (the child within). The Id is, in a sense, a computer. Like most computers, it operates on the "garbage in-garbage out" principle. There's an old superstition "as you name something, so will it become." Tell yourself that you're very unlucky and your id will obligingly give you bad days by enhancing any negatives in your environment. Tell yourself that you are clumsy, and your id-computer will obligingly arrange for you to break a leg while stepping off the sidewalk. The bad news is that the Id can't make a judgment as to whether or not this is a good idea. It only knows that it's received these "instructions" and must carry them out. The good news is that you can actually program/reprogram this portion of your mind.
You begin programming this Internal Servant of yours by first drawing its attention to what you want done and then explaining what you need done in a simple and clear manner. Repeating the instructions in a chant help fix the goals for the Id-- rhymed chants seem to be easier for it to process. Each time you perform the ritual and repeat the chant, the programming is strengthened. Never mind that your ego and superego understand that you're going to program the child-like Id. It works just the same.
To direct the Id's attention to the process, you first have to impress it. Using special tools and clothing alert it that something unusual is going on and that it must pay attention. Acquiring hard-to-obtain items, drawing symbols, performing a symbolic sacrifice (donating money, say, to a good cause) are all ways of reinforcing the Id's impression that this ceremony is very special and that the result will be very powerful. Organized, meaningful symbols, speak to your subconscious mind in ways it understands, reinforcing the goals you have set.
Drawing the circle itself establishes boundaries within your environment ("The rest of the world can do what it likes Out There. All within this circle is in MY control!"). Purifying the circle and consecrating it (sprinkling water which has been blessed and salt added) further enforce your territory, defining the borders where you are "safe". Nothing can enter this area except what you invite inside. You further tighten these borders by calling on certain Powers.
You can call on any powers you like. Some use traditional Christian images. Others call up deities from the religion they are most comfortable with. And many people use the thought/image of a beam of light that represents either God/Goddess (whichever one they like) OR The power of light and life and goodness in the Universe.
The number of powers called as guardians varies. You may choose to invoke one powerful being to protect your circle. Or you might call on the Universal Being/Light AND four guardians (one for each quarter of the compass). A third approach is to use a guardian for the four quarters of the compass and no higher being. There is no "absolutely correct" system; the correct system is the one that YOU are comfortable with.
Take time to choose the guardians of your circle carefully. You should select guardians (gods or animals or some form of life) which have a deeper meaning to you and whose qualities are in harmony with your goals. For the new student, it's best to have all your Powers and Guardians from the same belief system/religion/mythic universe so that the symbols will be consistent and not confuse the Id.
You CAN use people-- saints, movie actors, figures from favorite books as guardians. DO, however, pick someone who's dead or non-existent. The dead can't argue with your interpretation of them, whereas the living may be highly offended to be approached as gods/ guardians).
As your studies continue, you will find that your totems or guardians change. This is to be expected; as you explore new realms in your studies, you may find you need guardians who deal with very specific areas to strengthen and guide you in these new fields.
But don't make the mistake of assuming that you'll become so powerful that you will never need the protection of the psychic shielding circle in some form. And don't assume that you will not need a circle for "positive" magicks such as healing. Open is open-- and open is vulnerable. And circles strengthen and protect you by defining what psychological influences will be allowed to work with you.
Most people tend to make a decision wether you will be in a Coven or Solitary but rarely Remember they can change back and forth freely at your their own will if their needs or desires change. You are not bound to one way, you are your own and you make your own path.
So now we ask, Coven or Solitary?
The group that Witches work in is most often called a coven. The coven has advantages and disadvantages. If a coven has the right group of people it is a marvelous entity.
The coven system allows each Witch to share the energy and creativity of others in practicing magick. It becomes sort of a "Magickal Cooperative" where joint efforts benefit everyone.
Simple companionship is important as well. Celebrating a sabbat as a group is far more fun than trying to sing, dance, and feast by yourself.
Perhaps most important is the caring support of one another. As covernors work and play together, they form emotional and psychic bonds that make it possible to share dreams and fears, explore hidden parts of themselves, and take those risks so necessary for growth that are so difficult to do with casual friends or acquaintances.
There is a reason for the phrasing of the above piece. When you cast a circle you are in fact no longer in this world entirely. You are also not in the astral world entirely. You actually are in between the two. If you think of it this is a really marvelous thing, the fact that you can carve out a bit of space to perform your ritual between the existence that we know and the next. Think of it! What could be more fantastic than that realisation? The cold blue flame streaming from your athame is serving as a barrier to both worlds and allowing you to exist in both and neither at the same time. How extraordinary a thing. Even after 30 years, and I don't know how many circles, the wonder of it still amazes me a bit.
When you are inside the circle you are in sacred space. If you have ever been in one you know this. Some people are able to see the walls of the circle and the world beyond appears misty or etherial. Some simply sense the change in the space as the circle is formed without seeing any difference. If you have not had this experience yet, you will. As you develop your abilities to visualise, concentrate and open your senses you will more than likely come to a place where the difference will be apparent to you. Even if it is not, you must know that there is a difference. The circle is real, the walls are there, concentrating the power within them until it is released as a fully formed energy form to the universe.
The circle is a powerful thing if you make it one. Casting a circle is a skill that you develop with practice. Your abilities will increase with time and the circles you cast will be stronger and more powerful than the first ones you began casting as a beginner. Wicca is different in their view of the circle than ritual magic is. In some schools of ceremonial magic the circle is there for protection as well as a sacred space. To keep the entities you conjure at bay. In Wicca the circle serves as both a sacred space and as a concentrator for the power you raise within it, preventing it from dispersing prematurely and allowing you to build the energy to a maximum before releasing it to produce your ritual intent. This function is refered to as raising the cone of power by many.
If a church may be loosely defined as a space where the faithful go to communicate with their deity, to pray and perform rituals in the honor of the deity, then the circle is a church. It is where you go to conduct rituals thanking your deities for the blessings you have received and expect to receive in the future. It is where you go to conduct magic to achieve the results that you require in time of need. It is the space where you can most effectively communicate with your deities at times of the year considered sacred such as sabbats. Even if you don't consider yourself to be particularly religious, the circle is a sacred space in that it is
The Dark Night of the Soul" is the name given to that experience of spiritual desolation that all students of the Occult pass through at one time or another. It is sometimes characterized by feelings that your occult studies or practices are not taken you anywhere, that the initial success that one is sometimes granted after a few months of occult working, has suddenly dried up. There comes a desire to give up on everything, to abandon exercises and meditation, as nothing seems to be working. St.John of the Cross. a christian mystic, said of this experience, that it;
"...puts the sensory spiritual appetites to sleep, deadens them, and deprives them of the ability to find pleasure in anything. It binds the imagination, and impedes it from doing any good discursive work. It makes the memory cease, the intellect become dark and unable to understand anything, and hence it causes the will to become arid and constrained, and all the faculties empty and useless. And over this hangs a dense and burdensome cloud, which afflicts the soul, and keeps it withdrawn from the good."
Though the beginner may view the onset of such an experience with alarm (I know I did), the "Dark Night" is not something bad or destructive. In one sense it may be seen as a trial, a test by which the Gods examine our resolve to continue with occult work, and if you are not completely whole-hearted about your magical studies, it is during this period (at its beginning) that you will give up. The Dark Night of the Soul should be welcomed, once recognized for what it is (I have always received an innate "warning" just before the onset of such a period), as a person might welcome an operation that will secure health and well-being. St.John of the Cross embraced the soul`s Dark Night as a Divine Appointment, calling it a period of "sheer grace" and adding;
"O guiding Night,
O Night more lovely than Dawn,
O Night that has united the lover with his beloved Transforming the Lover in her Beloved."
When entering the Dark Night one is overcome by a sense of spiritual dryness and depression. The notion, in some quarters, that all such experiences should be avoided, for a peaceful existence, shows up the superficiality of so much of contemporary living. The Dark Night is a way of bringing the Soul to stillness, so that deep psychic transformation may take place. All distractions must be set aside, and it is no good attempting to fight or channel the bursts of raw energy that from time to time may course through your being. This inner compulsion to set everything aside results in the outer depression, when nothing seems to excite.
The only thing to do is obey your inner voice and become still, waiting for the inner transformation, (which the "Dark Night" heralds), to take place. You may not be aware for a very long time of the results of that inner change, but when the desire to work comes again and the depression lifts, the Dark Night has (for a moment) passed. No one can help during this time, and in many cases there is hardly anyone to turn for advice. One must disregard the well-meaning advice of family and friends to "snap out of it" this is no ordinary depression, but a deep spiritual experience which only those who have passed through themselves (in other words to a magical retreat) but for many, as the routines of everyday life prohibits this, all you can do is cultivate an inner solitude, a stillness and silence of heart, and wait, (like a chrysalis waits for the inner changes that will result in a butterfly) for the Transformation to work itself out. There are many such "Dark Nights" that the occult seeker must pass through during the mysterious process of mitigation. They are all trials but experience teaches one to cope more efficiently.
The most common names found associated with The Old Religion, in Italy, are Diana & Dianus. Dianus is the nature god, associated with the woods, herds, fertility, and so on. He was present in the rites of Diana at the sacred grove of Nemi. He is also known as verbius, and is linked to the title Rex Nemorensis. Oaks were sacred to Dianus, which were present in the groves at Nemi. It seems likely that, in time, he was also associated with the god Janus. Janus was a god of doorways/portals (and of beginnings in general). In this aspect, Janus was a guardian who kept non-initiates away from the Mystery Traditions. He carried a whip and a rod, which could usher in, or drive away. Dianus, as the guardian Rex Nemorensis, is easily linked to Janus, in this aspect. In the Aridian Tradition, Diana and Dianus would be two parts of the Divine One Great Spirit. Usually, Dianus is visualized as a stag god, or a man with antlers. He can also be associated with the forest god, known as Kern (no, Kern, not Herne...different land, similar story).
Dianus is the consort of Diana, even in Her chaste aspect. Here they are more like brother and sister. In other aspects they are lovers, and so on. Historical references to the cult of Diana and Dianus (< Century 4th the as early appear Age) Classical than>
Jana is one of the names we Aridians use for the Goddess (the others are Tana & Fana). The Goddess Jana is the Moon Goddess of the Janarric Clan. In Naples, the term Janarra was once used as the word for witch (instead of Strega). The Janarra are the keepers of the Lunar mysteries, in the Triad Traditions. Sometimes they are called the Sea Witches, because they once practiced along the coastal regions, and near the Bay of Naples.
In Italy there are three Clans, known as the Triad. The first is called the Fanarra, second is the Janarra, and third is the Tanarra. The Fanarra are the "keepers of the earth mysteries", the Janarra are "keepers of the Lunar mysteries", and the Tanarra are the "keepers of the stellar mysteries". Originally they were one Clan, comprised of the covens which Aradia had established in the 14th Century. When the Inquisition began murdering witches, the Clan split up into their respective mystery traditions, in order to preserve at least one of the old Mystery Teachings. As the Fates would have it, however, all three survived. The Aridian Tradition is a rejoining of the three, back into the original state (as practiced in the time of Aradia). Each leader of a Clan, has a working knowledge of the two other Clans. Each Clan has a different aspect of Deity, for their Focus
Non-Pagan history describes familiars as low-ranking demons in constant attention to Witches for the purpose of carrying out spells and bewitchments. Familiars usually assumed animal forms - cats, toads, owls, mice and dogs seem to have been the most common - though virtually any animal or insect could be suspected. In the Witchcraft Trials, if so much as a fly buzzed in the window while someone suspected of being a witch was being questioned or tried, it was said to be her (or his) familiar. The inquisitors took the Bile to heart: those who had familiars were "an abomination unto the Lord" and should be "Put to death: they shall stone them with stones: Their blood shall be upon them" (Lev. 20:27).
Familiars - also called imps - were said to be given to Witches by the Devil or bought or inherited from other Witches. A Witch could have several of them. Cats were the favored forms, especially black ones. The fear that all cats were Witches' familiars was one of the primary reasons for the famous cat massacres that swept through medieval Europe.
Familiars were given names like any household pet, which most of them undoubt- edly were. Perhaps the best known familiar name is Pyewackett, the moniker the Witch's cat in the movie Bell, Book and Candle, and a name that dates back to Renaissance England. Pyewackett, Matthew Hopkins (the famous Witch hunter) stated, was a name "no mortal could invent."
During the Witch hysteria of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the obsession with familiars was confined mostly to England and Scotland, where they are mentioned in numerous trial records, especially those related to Hopkins. The Witchcraft Act of 1604 made it a felony to "consult, convene with, entertain, employ, feed, or reward any evil and wicked spirit to or for any intent or purpose." But the Malleus Maleficarum (1486), the major Witch inquisitor's handbook, offers no instructions concerning familiars in the interrogation and trial of Witches. The book does acknowledge that an animal familiar "always works with the Witch in everything."
There is a scant evidence of familiars in early American Witch trials. In the Salem Trials in 1692, John Bradsheet was indicted for "inciting a dog to afflict." The dog was tried and hanged as a Witch. Outside of Witch trials, more benevolent familiars were believed to exist, serving wizards and wise men (and women) who were magicians or village healers. The familiars helped diagnose illnesses and the sources of bewitchment and were used for divining and finding lost objects and treasures. Magicians conjured them in rituals, then locked then in bottles, rings and stones. They sometimes sold them as charms, claiming the spirits would ensure success in gambling, love, business or whatever the customer wanted. This sort of familiar was technically not illegal; England's Witchcraft Act of 1604 prohibited only evil and wicked spirits. Some familiars were said to be Faeries. Oberon was a popular name for fairy familiars in 15th and 16th century England.
Many modern Witches have animal familiars, usually cats, which are their magical helpers. Some also have dogs, birds, snakes or toads. Witches do not believe the familiars are "demons" or spirits in animal form but simply animals whose psychic attunement makes them ideal partners in magical workings. Some Witches say that it is possible to endow pets with magical powers and turn them into familiars, though others don't believe it should be done. Still others believe familiars are never "pets" (and should never be treated as such) but are animals who volunteer to work as familiars and are Karmically attracted to Witches. Witches who do not have familiars send out psychic "calls" to draw the right animal.
Familiars reputedly are sensitive to psychic vibrations and power and are welcomed partners inside the magic circle and other magical work. They also serve as psychic radar, reacting visibly to the presence of any negative or evil energy, whether it be an unseen force or a person who dabbles in the wrong kind of magic. Familiars are also given psychic protection by their Witches. Some Witches it seems also use the term familiar to describe thought-forms created magically and empowered to carry out a certain task on the astral plane.
Sorcerers and shamans in cultures around the world also have helpers in the form of spirits. Dispatching them on errands to heal, harm or kill - called sending. The physical shape of a familiar varies. New Guinea sorcerers rely on snakes and crocodiles, while in Malaya, the familiar is usually an owl or badger passed down from generation to generation.
Throughout Africa, the wild creatures of the bush are said to be Witches' familiars: for the Lugbara, they are said to be the toad, snake, lizard, water frog, bat, owl, leopard, jackal and a type of monkey that screeches in the night; for the Dinka, they are black cobras and hyenas. The Zulus' familiars are said to be corpses dug up and re-animated with magic; they are sent out at on night errands to scare travelers with their shrieking and pranks. In Shamanism, a novice shaman acquires his familiar spirits, usually manifesting in animal, reptile or bird shapes, when he completes his initiation. He or she may send them out to do battle in his or her place, but if they die, so does the shaman. Familiars usually stay with their shaman until death, then disappear. Among certain Eskimos, the familiar is embodied in an artificial seal, not a live animal.
In closing, what I usually instruct in this area is that the student of magic who feels that they have found a familiar is that they should practice an exercise called "Trading Places" by Keith Harry. This exercise is simple enough to memorize and to practice, and though it was not written specifically for bonding with an animal familiar it was designed for becoming familiar with an animal, and inducing a mystical experience. I think you will readily discern its value in the acquiring of a familiar.
TRADING PLACES EXERCISE
Objective:
To trade places (mentally) with a dog or cat, or other animal.
Setting:
Home, Zoo, Wilderness, etc.
Instructions:
Relax your body as completely as you can. Calm your mind, eliminating all thoughts which do not relate to your intent and purpose. Sit so that you are comfortable, and as nearly as possible on the same level with the animal you will be working with. Lie down if you like. The important thing is that you are able to comfortably make eye contact with your animal partner in this exercise. It is also important to satisfy yourself that the animal is likewise comfortable and secure with you.
Take a deep breath. As you slowly exhale, look into the animal's eyes, and imagine that a part of your awareness is being transmitted through your breath into the animal's mind. Watch the animal breathe, and imagine that a part of its awareness is being transmitted into your mind.
Continue looking directly into the animal's eyes until you fell your consciousness merge with the animal's consciousness.
Benefits:
As the boundaries between you and the animal dissolve, you may feel as if you've really traded places with a member of another species, as though a part of you has become the animal - this is the height of subjective merging. You may begin to feel compassion for another species. You'll also probably recognize some of the artificial differences between the human and animal worlds. You may be able to feel or sense the actual flow of the animals emotions and mental imagery. Should you accomplish this then it should be no trouble for you to contract with the animal to serve as your magical partner. Asking another to become such a partner also places upon you the responsibility of becoming its partner. I would not recommend contracting an animal to become your familiar and then treating the animal as a pet. A pet is something you possess, own. A Familiar, to my way of thinking, is an individual who has entered into a mutually beneficial relationship (partnership) with you, and therefore should be afforded the respect and consideration due a partner.
· AKASHA: the spiritual ether (or Aether); the omnipresent fifth occult element which embraces the other four earth, air, fire, and water; and from which they stem. This is the realm of "pattern" or causality, from which the realm the normally thought of "five senses manifests. Some define it is the "other" of the "two worlds" that the witch or magician walks between.
· ARADIA: Daughter of the Goddess Diana, and a name for the Goddess used by Italian Witches or Strega, commonly used in many Wiccan traditions today.
· ASPECTING: Any advanced magickal activity in which a practitioner manifests a particular aspect of the Goddess or God, in thought, feelings, behavior, appearance, etc.; Often as a direct result of a "Drawing Down". Often a minor variation of this phenomena occurs with the selection of a "Magical Name", of Craft Name.
· ASPECTS: Forms, facets, or personas of Deity: for example, Brighid, Iseult,Eos, and Kore are all aspects of the Maiden, and the Maiden is an aspect of the Goddess.

Couples wishing for fertility would " jump the fires" on Beltane night. Also the traditional Sabbath where the rule of the "Wheel of the Year" is returned to the Goddess. This Festival also marks the transition point of the threefold Goddess energies from those of Maiden to Mother.
· BOOK OF SHADOWS: Traditionally hand copied book of rituals, recipes, training techniques, guidelines, and other materials deemed important to a Witch or a coven. Each tradition has it's own standard version of the Book and each Witch's book will be different as he or she adds to it with time from many different sources. Only another Witch can see your book of shadows. Also, traditionally, it may never leave your hands or possession until death, when it should be destroyed, or (in some traditions) returned to the coven to be disposed of.
· BURNING TIMES: a term used by some Witches for the period of persecution in the Middle Ages and later. It is in fact a misnomer in some places, as Witches were only burned in Scotland, and on the continent of Europe. In England and the U.S., they were hanged.

This is the seasonal change where the first signs of spring and the return of the sun are noted, i.e. the first sprouting of leaves, the sprouting of the Crocus flowers etc. In other words, it is the festival commemorating the successful passing of winter and the beginning of the agricultural year. This Festival also marks the transition point of the threefold Goddess energies from those of Crone to Maiden.
· CARDINAL POINTS: North, South, East, and West, marked in the Georgian Tradition by candles of green, red, yellow, and blue, respectively. The Circle is drawn to connect these four points.

· COVEN: an organized group of Witches, led by a High priestess and/or a High Priest who meet regularly for worship and fellowship. The traditional membership is 13, but in fact most covens number considerably less. 3 is the minimum in the Georgian Tradition. In Middle English, "Covin" a group of confederates; In Old French "Covine" a band or group with a single purpose; Latin "Com"-together, "Venire"-to come or move.
· COVENSTEAD: regular meeting place for a coven. Usually the home of the High Priestess or High Priest.

· DIVINATION: magical method of exploration or inquiry into a situation via such methods as Tarot cards, runestones, I- Ching, etc.
· ELEMENTS: Earth, air, fire, and water, plus spirit, which includes them all. These are regarded as realms or categories of nature (both material and non-material) and are not to be confused with the physicists table of elements, which the modern witch, of course, accepts.
· ESBAT: weekly or biweekly meeting of a coven. Traditionally held either on the full moon or the new moon.
· FAMILIARS: Either a Witch's pet animal which has been trained to be a magickal helper, or an artificially created "elemental" which performs the same functions as the animal friend.
· FIVEFOLD KISS, FIVEFOLD SALUTE: The Witches' ritual salute, with kisses; (1) on each foot, (2) on each knee, (3) above the pubic hair, (4) on each breast, and (5) on the lips- really 8 kisses in all. It is only used within the Circle, but the words that go with it are the origin of "Blessed Be."

· MAIDEN: An appointment held by one of the women of the coven. She is virtually the assistant High Priestess. This term is also the descriptive term used to describe the first of the aspects of the Threefold Goddess Energies (Maiden, Mother, and Crone). It is traditionally associated with the Waxing Moon, and the period from Imbolc (Candlemas) to Beltane (May eve) where the energies are those of initiating, beginning, and creation.

· WARLOCK: a term coined in the Burning Times . It was used to denote a traitor to the Craft, or one who had betrayed the followers of the Old Religion. It's origin is Scottish. Because of the negative connotations, it is not used by most Wiccans today. Mostly Neo-Pagans/Yuppy Pagans use this term.
· WATCH TOWERS: Originally from the Enochian branch of Ceremonial Magick, now incorporated into many "Traditions" of Wicca, these are the four elemental "directions" or "quarters" (corresponding to the appropriate points on the compass) called to protect the Circle during its establishment. Each of them have a correspondence between the compass point, an element, and (varying amongst different traditions) color associated with them.

· WHITE HANDLED KNIFE/BOLINE: the working knife of a Witch. It is used to carve candles, and for fashioning the other tools. Traditionally, it can only be used in a Circle.
Before I begin, for those who don't really know me well, I wish to preface this short piece by explaining that I am NOT a teacher, as many like to claim of themselves. I am a student who likes to share what is learned. The world has too many 'authorities' who are such purely for reasons of perceived power or financial gain within the craft - I have no wish for such falsities to rule and destroy me as it ultimately does those who fall pray to its lure.
The following are lessons learned in circle or outside it from my own personal experience and those shared with me by others I have been close to, plain and simple. Take them as such and value them as you wish. They are not numbered to show importance, only to organize my thoughts in some format.
Within A Circle Trust is an absolute Necessity. If you attend a ritual be SURE you trust those involved. Many feel this, in todays society to be archaic. It has always proved out when I have tried to work with unknown people, those I was unsure of or who were in some way unsure of me, failure, disaster or heated debate resulting in dissent has always been the end point. Know a person before you are willing to enter sacred space with them.
Never spell cast too soon. Magic should not be a first resort. The use of non-magical means should be applied when possible and convenient. Overuse of magic, like anything else, becomes a crutch that can unbalance your life.
Prophecy is a two-edged sword. Remember this, whether you read Tarot, I-Ching, Runes or whatever other means of divination or personal analysis. Be prepared to have the reading to go in directions you do not expect and be prepared for them NOT to be in a way you will like. Remember the Lesson of Cassandra (in Greek Mythology) that sometimes you can change the future and sometimes you cannot, and only time will tell which is which. If you cannot deal with the possibility of your personal wants or expectations being wrong, then you should not be consulting a means of divination. I have seen even long-time craft-folk who forget this lesson in the heat of emotion.
There is not a magical answer behind everything. I have known some folks who became so obsessed in their personal paranoia of some form of 'magical attack' or 'magical influence' that such became their excuse for everything that occurred around them, even when very simple non-magical answers existed to explain what had occurred. The number of magical practitioners at present is VERY small, and most have a range of influence that doesn't extend far on their own. The gathering of hateful or vindictive emotional energy to achieve a magical attack on another is not done easily or quickly, and tends to harm the attacker more often then the target. Look with logic on a situation.
Diversify. Don't depend on or look into only a single philosophy or magical application - a specialist is usually someone who is refusing to grow beyond boundaries they have set for themselves.
A single Teacher Is NOT enough. You will spend a lifetime as a real student, even if others one day declare you a teacher, leader or High Priestess. Gather from many to find what your life path is. Do not let anyone tell you there is ONLY one true belief system, one true Divinity, one way to approach a situation or one teacher to follow.
In the End you ARE Solitary. All Magickal workers are eventually forced to depend upon their own company, separated from the many communities and groups by distance, time or belief. You will probably spend more time solitary then in a group. Be prepared to face this when it happens. The Pagan Community is too small to be everywhere for everyone or to even always help its own (though trying to do so is a goal I feel vital to expand the community). You must become sufficiently balanced and grounded to deal with being alone and to practice your beliefs alone, especially in times of hardship and adversity.
Don't be too fast to assume the role of a teacher, or to assume that a student cannot teach you something in return. Can you really explain what you believe and do within your belief coherently? Does the person to be taught really want to learn it all and are they sincere, or are they merely curious or on a 'power trip'? Learning to know when someone is ready to learn is one of the hardest lessons you must learn if you purposely teach. Don't give a hand grenade to a three year old and expect positive results.
Not all paths and philosophies are desirable. There are many that are self-destructive, purely self-indulgent or a combination of both. If a path cannot teach you some form of inner peace with yourself and what you are doing in life, or is devoted to manipulating others to achieve your personal benefits, then it is a 'dead-end path', one that is a cul-de-sac on the path of growth.
Don't do what feels uncomfortable. If performing a ritual, using a magic form, reciting a chant/prayer or performing an activity feels personally painful, uncomfortable or 'wrong' then it is not for you to be involved with it at that time. Listen to the inner voice of your spirit and follow its lead. Intuition is a powerful gift, don't waste it by always opposing it.
You will have to take chances. Magic doesn't work on its own, and positive karma won't help you if you fight it when it seeks to restore balance around you. It is not enough to cast a prosperity spell and then sit home and wait for a letter in the mail from Ed MacMahn with a check in it! You must take non-magical action to help things along. Cast a spell for a new job? Sure, but then don't turn down a chance to read job listings, mail resumes or attend an interview! Working to heal a sick spouse? ok, but make sure they are getting medical advice, enough to eat, attention, care, therapy, etc. to help the magic on its way!

Gems and stones carry living force, or energy. For centuries, various religions have integrated the use of them into their practices. Often, gems and stones would be placed on tools of war for protection. In most pagan practices, gems and stones were used for their healing, protecting, scrying and cleansing properities.

A lot of people have a herb garden, others prefer to buy there herbs. Though simple in design, the Witches' garden contains a wealth ofmagical material from which she concocts her sachets, incenses, aromatic oils and charm-bags. The Witch knew simplegardening rules, tips on treating destructive pests, and general earth-wisdom. We have tryed to lay out this section so that anyone, Witch or non-Witch, can grow and use herbs according to the old magicalmethods.
This collection of Herb/Plant information is small, but usefull to beginers. If you have info on herb/Plant we dont have listed, We encourage you to Contact us.

The Law (Humor)
Your High Priestess
In the Magic Circle, the words, commands, and every wish of the High Priestess are law. She isthe earthly, living representativeof our GraciousGoddess. She must be obeyed and respected in all things. She is Our Lady and above all others, a queen in the highest sense of the word. Allfemale coveners must curtsywhenever they comebefore her and say, "Blessed Be." All male coveners must bend the knee and give her a kiss on the right cheek and say, "Blessed Be."
Your High Priest
He is the earthly, living representative of the Great Horned God and in the Magic Circle, He commandeth the respect due to one who is a Magus, a Lord Counselor, and father.
The Laws
The Law was made and ardane of old.
The Law was made for the Wicca to advise and help in their troubles.
The Wicca should give due worship to the Gods and obey Their will, which They ardane, for it was made for the good of the Wicca, as the worship of the Wicca is good for the Gods. For the Gods love the brethren of the Wicca.
As a man loveth a woman by mastering her,
So the Wicca should love the Gods by mastering them.
And it is necessary that 0 (Magic Circle) which is the temple of the Gods, should be duly cast and purified that it may be a fit place for the Gods to enter.
And the Wicca should be properly prepared and purified to enter into the presence of the Gods.
With love and worship in their hearts, they shall raise power from their bodies to give power to the Gods.
As has been taught of old.
For in this way only may man have a communion with the Gods, for the Gods cannot help men without the help of man.
And the High Priestess shall rule Her Coven as the representative of the Goddess.
And the High Priest shall support Her as the representative of the God.
And the High Priestess shall choose whom She will, if he have sufficient rank, to be Her High Priest.
For, as the God himself kissed Her feet in the Fivefold salute, laying His power at the feet of the Goddess, because of Her youth and beauty, Her swetness and kindness, Her wisdom and Her justice, Her humility and gentleness and generosity,
So He resigned all His power to Her.
But the High Priestess should ever mind that all power comes from Him.
It is only lent, to be used wisely and justly.
And the greatest virtue of a High Priestess be that She recognizes that youth is necessary to the representative of the Goddess.
So will She gracefully retire in favor of a younger woman, should the Coven so decide in council.
For the true High Priestess realizes that gracefully surrendering the pride of place is one of the greatest virtues.
And that thereby will She return to that pride of place in another life, with greater power and beauty.
In the old days, when Witches extended far, we were free and worshipped in all the greatest temples.
But, in these unhappy times, we must celebrate our Sacred Mysteries in secret.
So be it ardane, that none but the Wicca may see our mysteries, for our enemies are many and torture loosens the tongue of men.
So be it ardane, that no Coven shall know where the next Coven bide.
Or who its members be, save only the Priest and Priestess and the Messenger.
And there shall be no communication between them, save only by the Messenger of the Gods, or the Summoner.
And only if it be safe may the Covens meet in some safe place for the Great Festivals.
And while there, none shall say whence they come, nor give their true names.
To this end, that if any be tortured, in their agony, they may not tell if they do not know.
So be it ardane, that no one shall tell anyone, not of the Craft, who be of the Wicca, or give any names, or where any abide, or in any way tell anything which can betray any of us to our faces.
Nor may he tell where the Covendom be.
Or the Covenstead.
Or where the meetings be.
And if any break these Laws, even under torture, the Curse of the Goddess shall be upon them, so they may never be reborn on earth, and may they remainm where they belone, in the Hell of the Christians.
Let each High Priestess govern Her Coven with justice and love, with the help and advice of the High Priest and the Elders, always heeding the advice of the Messenger of the Gods if He comes.
She will heed all complaints of all Brothers and strive to settle all differences among them.
But it must be recognized that there will always be people who will ever strive to force others to do as they will.
These are not necessarily evil.
And they oft have good ideas, and such ideas should be talked over in council.
But, if they will not agree with their Brothers or if they say:
"I will not work under this High Priestess."
It hath ever been the Old Law, to be convenient for the Brethren, and to avoid disputes.
Any of the third may claim to found a new Coven, because they live over a league from the Covenstead or are about to do so.
Anyone living within the Covendom and wishing to form a new Coven shall tell the Elders of their intentions and on the instand avoid their dwelling and remove to a new Covendom.
Members of the old Coven may join the new one when it is formed, but if they do they must utterly avoid the old Coven.
The Elders of the old and new Covens should meet in peace and brotherly love to decide the new boundaries.
Those of the Craft who live outside both Covens may join either indifferent, but not both.
Though all may, if the Elders agree, meet for the Great Festivals, if it be truly in peace and brotherly love.
But splitting the Coven oft means strife, so for this reason these Laws were made of old, and may the Curse of the Goddess be on any who disregard them!.
If you would keep a book (your Black Book) let it be in your own hand of write, let Brothers and Sisters copy what they will, but never let the book out of your hands and never keep the writings of another.
For if it be in their hand of write, they may be taken and engained.
Le each guard his own writings, and destroy them whenever danger threatens.
Learn as much as you may by heart, and when danger is past, rewrite your book when it be safe.
For this reason, if any die, destroy their book, an they have not been able to.
For, an it be found, 'tis clear proof against them.
And our oppressors know well: "Ye may not be a Witch alone."
So all their kin and friend be in danger of torture.
So destroy everything not necessary.
If your book be found on you, 'tis clear proof against you alone. You may be engained.
Keep all thoughts of the Craft from your mind.
If the torture be too great to bear, say: "I will confess. I cannot bear this torture. What do you want me to say?"
If they try to make you talk of the Brotherhood, do not.
But if they try to make you speak of impossibilities such as flying through the air, consorting with the Christian Devil, or sacrificing children or eating men's flesh,
To obtain relief from the torture, say, "I hold an evil dream, I was beside myself, I was crazed.:
Not all the magistrates are bad; if there be any excuse, they may show mercy.
If you have confessed ought, deny it afterwards. Say you babbled under the torture, say you do not know what you said.
If you are condemned, fear not.
Fear not, the Brotherhood is powerful, they will help you to escape if you stand steadfast.
But if you betray ought, there is no hope for you in this life or that to come.
Be sure, if steadfast you go to the pyre, drugs will reach you, you will feel naught. You but go to death and what lies beyond.
The Ecstasy of the Goddess
To avoid discovery, let the working tools be as ordinary things that any may have in their houses.
Let the Pentacles be of wax so that they may be broken at once or melted.
Have no sword, unless your rank allows you one.
Have no names or signs on anything.
Write the names or signs on them in ink immediately before consecrating them, and wash it off immediately afterwards.
Do not engrave them lest they cause discovery.
Let the color of the hilts tell which is which.
Ever remember, ye are the "Hidden Children of the Goddess," so never do anything to disgrace them or her.
Never boast, never threaten, never say you would wish ill of anyone.
If any person, not in the magic circle, speak of the Craft say, "Speak not to me of such, it frightens me. 'Tis eveil luck to speak of it."
For this reason: the Christians have their spied everywhere. These speak as if they were well affected to us, as if they would come to our meetings saying, "My mother used to go worship the Old Ones. I would I could go myself."
To such as these, ever deny all knowledge.
But to others, ever say, "'Tis foolish talk of Witches flying through the air. To do so they must be light as thistledown. And men say that Witches all be so bleary-eyed, old crones, so what pleasure can there be at a Witch meeting such as folks talk on?"
And say "Many wise men now say there be no such creatures."
Ever make it a jest and in some future time, perhaps, the persecution may die and we may worship our Gods in safety again.
Let us all pray for that happy day.
May the blessings of the Goddess and God be on all who keep these Laws which are ardane.
If the Craft have any Appenage, let all guard it, and help to keep it clear and good for the Craft.
And let all justly guard all monies of the Craft.
But if any brother truly wrought it, 'tis right they have their pay, and it be just. And this be not taking money for the Art, but for good and honest work.
And ever the Christians say, "The laborer is worthy of his hire" but if any brother work willingly for the good of the Craft without pay, 'tis to their greatest honor.
If there be any quarrels or disputes among the brethren the High Priestess shall straightly convene the Elders and inquire into the matter and they shall hear both sides, first alone, then together.
And they shall decide justly, not favoring the one side or the other.
Ever recognizing there be people who can never agree to work under others.
But at the same time, there be some people who cannot rule justly.
To those who ever must be chief, there is one answer.
Void the Coven, or seek another one or make a Coven of your own, taking with you those who will go.
To those who cannot rule justly the answer be, "Those who cannot bear your rule will leave you."
For none may come to meetings with those with whom they are at variance.
So, an either cannot agree, "Get hence, for the Craft must ever survive."
In the olden days, when we had power, we could use the Art against any who ill-treated the Brotherhood. But in these evil days, we must not do so! For our enemies have devised a burning pit of everlasting fire, into which they say their God casteth all the people who worship Him, except it be the very few who are released by their priest's spells and masses. And this be chiefly by giving monies and rich gifts to receive His favor, for their God is ever in need of money.
But as our Gods need our aid to make fertility for man and crops, so it is the God of the Christians ever is in need of man's help to search out and destroy us. Their priests ever tell them that any who get our help are damned to this Hell forever, so men be mad with the terror of it.
But they make men believe that they may escape this Hell if they give Witches to the tormentors. So for this reason, all be forever spying, thinking, "An I catch but one of the Wicca, I will escape this fiery pit."
So for this reason we have our hidels, and men searching long and not finding say, "There be none, or if there be, they be in a far country."
But when one of our oppressors dies, or even be sick, ever is the cry, "This be Witches' malice," and the hunt is up again and though they slay ten of their own to one of ours, still they care not. They have countless thousands.
While we are few indeed.
That none shall use the Art in any way to do ill to any.
However much they injure us, HARM NONE and now times many believe we exist not.
That this Law shall ever continue to help us in our plight. No one, however great an injury or injustice they receive, may use the Art in any way to do ill or harm any. But they may, after great consultations with all, use the Art to restrain Christians from harming us or tax others, but only to let or constrain them.
To this end, men will say: "Such a one is a mighty searcher out and a persecutor of old women whom they deemeth to be Witches, and none hath done him skith, so they be proof they cannot, or more truly where be none."
For all know full well, that so many folk have died because someone had a grudge against them, or were persecuted because they had money or goods to seize, or because they had none to bribe the searchers. And many have died because they were scolding old women. So much that men now say that "only old women are Witches."
And this be to our advantage, and turns suspicions away from us.
In England and Scotland, 'tis now many a year since a Witch hath died the death. But the misuse of the power might raise the persecution again.
So never break this Law, however much you are tempted, and never consent to it being broken in the least.
If you know it is being broken, you must work strongly against it.
And any High Priestess who consents to its breach must immediately be deposed. "For 'tis the blood of the Brethren they endanger."
Do good, an it be safe and only if it be safe.
And strictly keep to the old Law.
Never accept money for the use of the Art. For money ever smeareth the taker. "'Tis sorcerers and conjurers and priests of the Christians who ever accept money for the use of their Arts. And they sell dwale, and evil loves spells and pardons, so let men escape from their sins."
Be not as these. If you accept no money, you will be free from temptation to use the Art for evil courses.
All may use the Art for their own advantage, or for the advantage of the Craft, only if you are sure you harm none.
But ever let the Coven debate this at length. Only if all be satisfied and none be harmed may the Art be used.
If it is not possible to achieve your ends one way, perchance the aim may be achieved by acting in a different way, so as to harm none. May the Curse of the Goddess be on any who breaketh this Law.
'Tis judged lawful if any of the Craft need a house or land and none will sell, to incline the owner's mind so as to be willing to sell, providing it harmeth it not in anyway and the full price is paid, without haggling.
Never bargain or cheapen anything whilst you live by the Art.
'Tis the old Law and the most important of all Laws that no one may do anything which will endanger any of the Craft, or bring them into contact with the law of the land, or any of our persecutors.
In any disputes between the brethren, no one may invoke any Laws but those of the Craft.
Or any tribunal but that of the Priestess, Priest and Elders. And may the Curse of the Goddess be on any who do so.
It is not forbidden to say as Christians do: "There be Witchcraft in the land," because our opressors of old make it heresy not to believe in Witchcraft, and so a crime to deny it, which thereby puts you under suspicion.
But ever say "I know not of it here, perchance there may be, but afar off - I know not where."
But ever speak of those as old crones, consorting with the Devil and riding through the air.
But ever say: "But how many men may ride through the air an they be not light as thistledown?"
But the Curse of the Goddess be on any who cast any suspicion on any of the Brotherhood.
Or who speaks of any real meeting place where any abide.
Let the Craft keep books with the names of all herbs which are good for men, and all cures, so all may learn.
But keep another book with all the Bales and Apies and let only the Elders and other trustworthy people have this knowledge.
Remember the Art is the secret of the Gods and only may be used in earnest and never for show or pride, or vainglory.
Magicians and Christians may taunt us saying, "You have no power. Do magic before our eyes. Then only will we believe." Seeking to cause us to betray our Art before them.
Heed them not. For the Art is holy, and may only be used in need. And the Curse of the Gods be on any who break this Law.
It ever be the way with women, and with men also that they ever seek new love..
Nor should we reprove them for this.
But it may be found to the disadvantage of the Craft.
As, so many a time it has happened that a High Priest or High Priestess impelled by love, hath departed with their love, that is, they have left the Coven.
Now if a High Priestess wishes to resign, they may do so in full Coven.
And this resignation is valid.
But if they should run off without resigning, who may know if they may not return within a few months.
So the Law is: If a High Priestess leaves her Coven, but returns within rthe space of a year and a day, then she shall be taken back and all shall be as before.
Meanwhile, if she has a deputy, that deputy shall act as High Priestess for as long as the High Priestess is away.
If she returns not at the end of a year and a day, then shall the Coven elect a new High Priestess.
Unless there be a good reason to the contrary, the person who has done the work should reap the benefit of the reward.
If somebody else is elected, the deputy is made maiden and deputy of the High Priestess.
It hath been found that practicing the Art doth cause a fondness between aspirant and tutor, and it is the cause of better results if this be so.
But if for any reason this be undesirable, it can easily be avoided by both persons from the outset firmly resolving in their minds that if any such ensure, it shall be that of brother and sister, or parent and child.
And it is for this reason that a man may be taught by a woman and a woman by a man and that woman and woman and man and man should never attempt these practices together.
And may all the Curses of the Mighty Ones be on any who make such an attempt.
Order and discipline must be kept.
A High Priestess or a High Priest may and should punish all faults.
To this end: all the Craft must receive their correction willingly.
All, properly prepared, the culprit kneeling, should be told his fault, and his sentence pronounced.
Punishment should be the $ followed by something amusing such as several S S S S, or something of this nature.
The bulprit must acknowledge the justice of the punishment by kissing the hand of the Priestess and by kissing the $ on receiving sentence; and again thanking for punishment received.
LAW OF CAUSE AND EFFECT
Anything done under EXACTLY the same conditions will always be associated with exactly the same result. This law is taken for granted in the sciences and in everyday life. The whole concept of causation is now on shaky ground, thanks to developments in the field of quantum physics. But for practical purposes, in magick as well as in our everyday lives, we ignore causality to our own peril. We must assume, at least in dealing with things the size of human beings, that effects follow causes. Even in the constantly flowing, changing astral realm we find the law of cause and effect in full operation.
LAW OF KNOWLEDGE
This law tells us that "understanding brings control," that the more you know the more powerful you are. If you know all about something, you have total control over it. "Knowledge is power."
LAW OF SELF-KNOWLEDGE
This is a sub-law of the previous law and follows from it. If you know yourself, you control yourself. The more you know about yourself, the better you can control yourself.
LAW OF NAMES
This law is related to the Law of Knowledge and to the Law of Association. It states if one knows the whole and complete name of a phenomenon or entity, one has complete control over it. This is one of the reasons the Mystery Religions (including Christianity) conferred a new name on the neophyte. His new name was then his true name, but it was known only to his fellow members of the mystery. The Law of Names also relates to the Law of Personification which will be explained later. Two premises behind the present law are: (1) Names are definitions. This is more obvious in simpler languages, but it is as true of English as of any other. Sometimes the definition is hidden in the origin of the word, as is often the case with those derived from Latin or Greek, but it is there. (2) Names are mnemonic (memory) devices which trigger a range of associations. (See the Law of Association).
LAW OF WORDS OF POWER
This is a sublaw of the Law of Names. It states that certain words trigger changes in the inner and outer realities of the person saying them. Many of these words are corruptions of the names of ancient Gods. Words like "Abraxas," Osorronnophris," "Abracadabra" are examples. They have no meaning to us today, but THEIR POWER LIES IN THE SOUNDS OF THE WORDS THEMSELVES.
LAW OF ASSOCIATION
If two things have something in common (anything!), that thing can be used to control both. Bell's theorem in quantum mechanics indicates that every particle in the Universe affects every other. The following two sublaws, which anthropologists think are the basis of "primitive" magick, are more useful in practice. These are the Laws of Similarity and Contagion.
LAW OF SIMILARITY
Most people have heard of sympathetic magick, which is based on this principle. Effects resemble causes. To make something fly, put feathers on it and make chirping noises. Wave it in the air. The example is not entirely absurd and serves to illustrate the principle. Much of the magick of "primitive" people is of this nature. For example, rain is made by (among other actions) sprinkling water on the ground (or by washing your car -- a modern example of the same principle!).
LAW OF CONTAGION
This is the principle behind doll-sticking and such in "primitive" magick. This directly relates to Bell's theorem and states that things once in physical contact continue to influence one another after they have been separated. This relates more to our consciousness than to things as they are in the physical world, but defining the two is more difficult than they appear on the surface. Thinking, feeling, and memory are associational functions of the human brain. New data are related to existing knowledge and patterns are established which correlate particular elements of knowledge. The overall pattern, which includes the "personality" and the "world view" is the METAPATTERN of all this. This metapattern we may consider to be made up of the memories, fantasy images, beliefs, values, techniques, rules of behavior, attitudes, etc. which make up the individuality of the person.
LAW OF IDENTIFICATION
This law relates to those of Knowledge, Association and Personification. It states that by complete association between your metapattern and that of another entity, you can BECOME that entity. You can then examine your own metapattern from the point of view of that entity. At full identification, one "becomes" the entity. All idea of distinctness vanishes and you are empowered with all the attributes of that entity because you ARE that entity. The danger here is that many people become lost in the new identity as the stronger metapattern submerges the weaker. Proper training, practice and guidance will lessen the danger.
LAW OF SYNTHESIS
Two opposing ideas or items of data will be resolved into a third idea that is more valid than the first two. This principle allows you to hold two seemingly contradictory ideas (such as, "Electrons are particles," and "Electrons are waves.") at the same time. Reality is as it is, not as we conceive it (or even as we perceive it, for that matter). The wave-particle duality in physics is an example. Physicists were nonplussed to observe in their experiments that light behaved (depending on the experiment) sometimes like a wave and sometimes like a particle. Light striking a surface of copper, say, releases electrons from the surface. This phenomenon, when examined closely, demonstrates that light is made up of particles (now called photons) which impart energy to the electrons, allowing them to escape. However, another experiment, in which we direct a beam of light at some pinholes, "proves" that light is of the nature of waves. If we direct a beam of light at an arrangement of pinholes:
--------------------------------------- I I I I I I I I screen--> I I I I I <--pinhole I I I I I I I I I LIGHT I I I I I I I I I I I <--pinhole I I I I I I I I I I I I I ---------------------------------------
assuming that we have a beam of "parallel" light (a plane wavefront), we see the light projected onto the screen. If we cover one of the pinholes, we see a single illuminated spot on the screen. If wwe uncover the first and cover the second pinhole, we again see a single spot projected onto the screen. Now, if we uncover both pinholes, what do we see? Two spots of light? No! We see a pattern of alternating light and dark bands on the screen. This phenomenon is due to INTERFERENCE between the crests and troughs of the WAVES of light as they strike the screen. When two crests occur together, or two troughs, the amplitude is doubled, and we get a bright area. But when a crest and trough coincide, they cancel each other, and the result is a dark spot of zero amplitude (no brightness). The point of all this is that interference is necessarily a WAVE phenomenon. The experiment demonstrates the wave nature of light. How do we resolve the dilemma? By realizing that we are dealing with something that is neither a wave nor a particle, but SOMETHING ELSE.
Preface: In my years of teaching and running a group, I have always had a dissatisfaction with the popular "Book of the Law" available to most Seekers. I felt it to be too archaic in its wording and perspec- tive -- and while it was valuable in the Burning Times, it simply does not deal with the concerns and needs of "modern-day" Witches. Over the years I became familiar with several other sets of Laws. Each of these had many good points, yet they also had their disadvantages as well.
Recently, I decided to do something daring -- I took the four dif- ferent versions of the Laws which I had, and combined and reworked them. I deleted what was no longer pertinent or meaningful, rewording others to make them clearer and more understandable, as well as throwing in a few new ones which I felt had been lacking.
I believe that what has evolved out of this work is a set of Laws which are readable, usable, and most importantly, pertinent to the needs of today's Witches and Neo-Pagans. It is with these thoughts and hopes that I would like to share them with you. If you should find merit or worth in them, then I will feel as though I have accomplished some- thing. The material in this booklet has not been copyrighted, so you may reproduce the Laws for students or friends, or reprint them in your publication. It is my sincere hope that the New Book of the Law will be of use to the Craft Community.
Blessed Be, Lady Galadriel
The Laws
1. The Laws were created to give our lives form and order, that all might be balanced throughout all of the planes. In truth there are two sets of laws which govern us -- one sets forth the ways of the Wiccan, and the other the ways of the Universe. Both are important, both should be observed with respect and treated with honor. The Laws were shaped and molded to teach us, to advise us, and to counsel us in our time of mortal life on earth.
2. Honor the Gods, for They are the channels and the manifestation of the Source. Honor yourself, for this force also lies within you. Love the Gods as They love you, and by loving yourself and your brothers and sisters, so the Gods shall honor you. As the love and joy of a man and a woman [or "lover and beloved" -- LAH] flowers and grows when nurtured with respect, and cultivated with understanding and honor, so should you love the Gods.
3. The Goddess is the Great Mother, and the God is the Great Father, and we are Their children; and we shall worship Them, for They are the rulers of the Universe, and all that is therein. Therefore, O Children of the Gods, try Them not, nor attempt to test Them, for They shall show you that he Ways of the Craft are not to be belittled or mocked.
4. Let the Power of the Craft flow from you only in love -- or not at all. For it has always been known that the energy webs which we weave and maintain shall eventually return to encircle their creator. Thus our works become either the net which entagles and binds us, or the web of light by which we find the Gods.
5. Let the Rites of the Wicca be a way for the children of the Gods to be as One -- for Power only flows when unified. Always should you revere the Earth, and heal and tend Her, for She is our life, our Mothership, on which we navigate the dark currents of space.
6. When you reap the harvests of your lands, then you shall not reap one corner of the field, nor glean the herb gardens, or the fallen fruits of the orchards. These you shall offer to the Earth Mother, in direct return, or through offerings made to your Circle, or to sustain its Priests and Priestesses.
7. Always be proud to be of the Wicca, but do not allow your pride to become vanity -- for those who are conceited are a stubling block at the door of the Temple, and they shall be cast adrift, to swim within their own vanity.
8. Observe and listen, reserving your judgement, for until all the silver is weighed, who can know the worth thereof?
9. As like breeds like, even more so does good beget love and joy. Your life will be full of love and joy if you are joyful and happy.
10. Your teachers are the servants of the Gods, and they shall plant the seeds of knowledge within the minds of their students, and they shall use their power for the good of the Wicca. Yet it is each individual's duty to tend the seeds which are planted, and to make the final harvest. Those who misuse the power and the trust of the teacher's position shall have to answer to the Lords of Karma, and adjust the balance accordingly.
11. The Temples of the Gods, which are Their abode on Earth, shall belong to all Their children, and each Circle shall be as a special family. Do naught against any Temple or any family of the Wicca, lest you do that thing unto the Gods, and against yourself.
12. You must not be a teller of tales amongst the children of the Goddess, and you must hold no malice or evil thoughts towards others of the Wicca.
13. You should not lie, nor give false testimony before your Elders, or those who are of the Wicca -- for liars are fools, and a menace unto themselves, and to the Wicca. Be truthful in all your works and deeds, especially within the Circle, for what you say within the presence of the Gods becomes manifest.
14. You must not put stumbling blocks in the way of those who do not follow the Path of the Wicca. You must make no unrighteous judge- ments of their ways, and you should aid them with an attitude of love when it is asked for. Yet ever should you keep the Counsel of the Elders, and reveal naught to others of where our Circles may be, nor may you reveal our ways without the consent of the Priestess.
15. When you make a vow to the Lord or the Lady, or you swear an oath to another of the Wicca, then you must do all that has come forth from your mouth, for a covenant with the Gods, or with the Wicca, is your Honor, and woe to those who care not for the fetters they attach to their souls by not keeping their word.
16. The Great Mother and Father would not have their children suffer the indignities of oppressors for their sake, for what is within the hearts of Their children is dear and true to Them. The Ancient and Mighty Ones shall cause the balance to be made for those who desecrate the Lord and Lady, Their temples, or Their creations.
17. Never shall you use Magick, nor the Craft, to cause harm, for this is misuse of the Power, and it is not to be condoned. To cause the death of another through the Craft is to require the death of the Self in sacrifice.
18. Never betray any of the brethren, nor the lore of our people, for you are all servants of the Gods, and must live by the virtues of love, honor and wisdom. Let truth, loyalty and honor be your creed. Let them be your guides, tempered by love and wisdom.
19. The Order of the Gods shall you keep, and within Their Circles shall you walk. You should not say "I believe" when you doubt, nor claim to obey the Lord and Lady's word when you never enter into the Temple. You must not profess with your lips that which is not in your heart.
20. Do not use the names of the Gods in negative or evil ways, for They love and cherish Their children above all others. All others They love, even those who know them not. Yet those who hate and curse in Their name shall have the Mighty Ones take the measure of their worth.
21. In any disputes between the children of the Goddess, no one may invoke any laws but those of the Craft, or any tribunal but that of Priestess, Priest, and Elders.
22. No one of the Wicca may do anything which will endagner the Craft, nor bring any of the Wicca into conflict with the Law of the Land, or with any of our persecutors.
23. Your magickal tools are channels to that which is most precious and pure within you. Do not cheapen them by haggling their price when you acquire them.
24. Never accept money for the use of the Power. It is sorcerors and charlatans who accept money for their spells and prayers. If you accept no money, you will be free from the temptation to use the Craft for evil or unworthy causes.
25. You shall never take unduly from any human, animal or elemental that which is not yours to take -- for if you steal from another, in the end you will have to sacrifice something dearer to you in order to attain the balance.
26. Show honor to all people, that they may look up to you, and respect you, and their eyes shall become a mirror for your soul.
27. Those who are of the Wicca shall not own slaves, for one person may not own the spirit of another, for only the Great Mother and Father own our souls. Nor shall you take as a pledge any person's life, for to do so is to take upon yourself both a mill and a mill- stone.
28. If a stranger sojourns with you, you shall do them no wrong; they shall be as one of the Circle, born amongst ye, and you shall deal with them as you would yourself.
29. Just weights and just balances shall be given by you, and just value shall you give, and thereby receive threefold.
30. Your altars shall be kept clean, pure and holy, and all that is brought into the Temple or the Circle shall be cleansed and blessed, for the joy of the Gods, and of the Wicca.
31. A clean mind should have a clean body. You should keep your body, your clothes, and your house clean, in honor of the Mother, who gives these things to you.
32. Let none die without honor, without love, without respect, unless their actions have decreed otherwise.
33. You should not couple together if it shall cause pain, jealousy or deprivation to another by doing so. Union for malice or evil reasons such as these upsets the balance, and the Lords of the Universe shall make adjustments accordingly.
34. Let those who would love, and would be as one, and bear child, be handfasted. For the sharing of love in this manner is beauteous, and love's union in the energy of the Gods, and the heritage of the child. It is important for children to know and to identify with those who brought them here.
35. The Law of the Goddess is that none of the Wicca shall take and wed someone who they do not love, whether it is to harm another, or for some form of material gain.
36. Remember that your children are Goddess-spawned, and are free spirits. You do not own nor control them. They are your brethren, come to visit for a while, that they may share in the vision of your love and wisdom. Let each parent realize that although they may teach and guide with love, the child shall also teach the parent, and aid them in their growth and lesson
37. The etheric web and energy vortexes of the earth are in constant flux and motion to adjust to the needs of the planet. The sacred trust of the Wicca is to create and to maintain centers of light and knowledge, using the magick of the divine spark within us to focus and channel the forces of the Universal fire. And these are the channels established between the worlds of the stars and the realms of the earth, bringing in and regulating the spirit flames which energize and activate all life forms. Thus we tend and guard the threads of creation, and we weave the patterns of life and manifestation in an ever-evolving tapestry.
38. Never use your heritage or position for self-glorification or gain. Respect your magick and our ways. We must always recognize that while others may look to us to lead them, they too are our guides.
39. Keep yor body strong, your mind keen, and your purpose pure, for within your being you shall channel the Power, and it needs to be strong and pure. And these are the keys to the path of Oneness, and to communication with the Gods. Yet first you must learn to speak to Them in such a manner as They can comprehend you. For the children of the Wicca must aid the Gods, and work with Them, otherwise the Gods cannot aid and work with you. Ever remember that the Priest and Priestess are the living representatives of the God and Goddess Forces, and likewise that all humans carry these forces within them, though they may lie dormant and unawakened.
40. As the Great Mother and Father come unto one another and create with the pure vibration of Love-Wisdom, so should you strive to make your Temple pure in vibration, and thus a fitting place wherein you may invite the Gods. Thus, your Circle should always be duly purified and cast, and likewise, those who would use the gateways and travel the Circle between the earth and other realms should also be duly prepared and purified.
41. The Goddess hath said, "I shall not carry thee, yet neither shall I hinder thee, nor keep thee from having the same opportunities as all of my children. Thou art free, yet thou shalt not be coddled like babes in the storm. If thou hast true devotion within thee, then all obstacles may be overcome."
42. The laggard is but half a person -- and though half is better than none, the whole is twice as good as the half. Those who do not work, or who lack the will and desire to learn the ways of the Gods, unto them is said, "The Ancient and Mighty Ones shall not keep thee within their house, if ye learneth not."
43. A sanctuary you shall make unto the Gods, that They may dwell amongst you. And you shall fashion it to the best of your ability, according to all tha your Elders shall show you, and pure energy shall you place therein.
44. An altar shall you make to unto the Lady, and you shall make due reverence unto Her, for every place where She is exalted, She will come to you and bless you. And you shall fashion your altar out of wood or stone, and burn incense and candles thereon, at the proper times, in observance of her ways.
45. You should set aside at least one day during each moon unto the Goddess, and on these days you shall do Her work; and on those days She shall renew Her children and bless them.
46. Learn to build your own Temple, and to craft your own sacred Circle, and all the tools that are used therein -- for to be a person of the Craft is to be a person of consequence.
47. Let each of you inscribe your own record of our ways and teach- ings. For the course of each Wiccan should be charted, that the patterns of their life-web may be made known and utilized. Let each Wiccan start their Book of Light with the teachings and lore of their tradition, yet let it also contain the rites and ways of each in- dividual, which are the harvest of each child of the Wicca, to use the wisdom of their heritage as the seeds of their own wisdom. Thus shall our lore and knowledge continue to grow and unfold, like a beautiful flower.
48. It is right to study and to understand the sigils, statues and stories of the Gods, for they shall guide your thoughts to Them, and They shall hear them. Yet you must ever remember that you worship not the sign nor the statue, but the Gods which inspired them.
49. If your Circle owns any land, let all guard it, and help to keep it clean. Let all justly guard all monies of the Circle, as well as the rights and property of all members of the Circle.
50. If any Wiccan truly labors, then it is right that they should have their just pay. This is not considered the taking of money for the Art, but good and honest work. Yet if any Wiccan works willingly for the good of the Craft, or for their brothers and sisters without pay, then it is to their greatest honor.
51. If any Wiccan should deny themselves some pleasure or material indulgence in order to do service in the Circle, this person shall be blessed and remembered. For those who give for the greater good of all shall have their spirit uplifted.
52. Know also that if you gift the Lady's Priests and Priestesses, or Her Circles, this is an offering made unto the Mother Herself, for a true Priest or Priestess strives always to do Her work, and to be of service to Her children, so to honor and respect them is to honor and respect the Queen of All.
53. And the offerings which are considered the most pleasing to the Gods are these: the fruits of the orchards the scents of the trees and herbs the metals of the earth the waters of the earth the flowers of the meadows and the milk of all mothers. Yet offerings of labor or money are honest too, and these will also be accepted -- moreso if you work with love in your heart, for always there is work to be done for the Gods, and service to be given to the children of the Wicca.
54. If your offerings are made to restore the balance, it must by of a nature that it not offensive to the Gods. It must be of value, yet given with a free heart. Thus shall the harmony be restored. If your offerings are given with a heart filled with love and devotion, or are of service to the Gods, or to the Craft, then shall you receive blessings manifold.
55. And when you make an offering unto the Gods, you should offer it thru the most proper medium, at the proper times, and in such a manner as to make it acceptable. Any and all remains of the rituals shall be consumed in the fire, or buried within the Earth, as a way of retur- ning to the Source all that we use in the observance of our ways, thus ensuring the continuity of the cycle.
56. All may use the Craft to help and aid them, or for the advantage of their Circle, or the Craft -- yet only if you are sure that you harm none. Let each Wiccan and Circle always debate these matters at length. Only if all be satisfied that none be harmed in any way, may the Art then be used. If it is not possible to achieve your ends one way, then perhaps the goal may be achieved by actng in a different way, so as to harm none.
57. Throughout the world it has been many a year since Wiccans have been burned. Yet misuse of the Power might raise the persecutions once again. So never break the Laws, however much you might be temp- ted, and never consent to their being broken. And if you know they are being broken, then you must work strongly against it.
58. In days of old it was decided by the Mighty Ones who came before us that the Art might be used to restrain others from harming the Craft or its children, yet only after great consultation with all members of the Circle, and only then to deflect or to constrain them.
59. And such were the ways of the Lady that She brought us forth in joy, and such were the Ways of the Lord that His reign gave all life pleasure. Offer love in your worship and all shall be joyous in beauty.
60. In the dimly remembered dawn of ages past, the Wicca were truly free. Then, in Atlantis came the Age of the Misuse of Power, followed by the Ages of Persecution and Suffering. Thus the people of the Wicca hid themselves and cloaked their knowlege, and wove veils of secrecy and silence. And this is how the Ways of the Wicca have been preserved through the time of darkness. Yet much of the ways of our people were lost to the ignorance of others.
61. Yet the cycle spirals ever on -- and the Age of the Earth Mother once again draws nigh. We must be strong -- one with our birthright, and one with our Gods, if we are to bring forth the balance. Those who would harm us, or attempt to enslave us, we must overcome -- yet only through light and love, and never through violence or the evil of chaos. And through our efforts the time of our people will come into being once more. In the times which lie ahead, there lies much work to be done, so that once more the cycles of life are drawn to the path of light, and the balance acheived through the power of love.
62. In order to bring the ways of Light and Love and Life to the peoples of the Earth, our secrets are slowly becoming secrets no more, and it is good that this is so -- for the age of shadow and secrecy is passing. Yet the sharing of our ways needs always to be guided by wisdom and by love. Let our rites and our mysteries be kept sacred. Let no one defile our worship or our heritage. For the defilement of our ways is an honor loss to self, and for the Craft.
63. Let each High Priestess govern her Circle with justice and Love, and with the help and advice of the Elders and the High Priest, always heeding the messages of the Gods when they come.
64. Ever remember that although the Priest is the force with which the Circle is built, the Priestess is the ruler therein -- for it is through her that the Goddess created the world, and all things therein.
65. The High Priestess will heed all complaints of all Pagans and Wiccans, and strive to settle any differences between them with reason and with justice.
66. Let each Circle of Light decide how it shall be known -- whether by earthly name or magickal one. For each child of the Wicca knows best the safety or dangers of their homeland.
67. Let each Circle or Temple maintain and dedicate unto the Goddess and the God all the things that are required for Their rituals, for what is blessed in the name of the Gods rightly belongs to Them, and the Priest and Priestess shall be the caretakers thereof.
68. Anyone of the circle who is of sufficient rank, and wishes to form a new Circle, shall tell the High Priestess and the Elders of their intentions. Members of the old Circle may join the new Circle when it is formed, but if they do so they must leave the other Circle, unless otherwise instructed. For it is the Old Law that each Wiccan may join the Circle of their choice, yet their energy should not be divided between two or more Temples.
69. The Elders of the old and new Circles shall meet in peace and with respect, to decide the level of interaction and connection between the Circles. Yet it is known that the splitting of a Circle often means strife. So only if it is truly in a spirit of peace and harmony should the Circles meet for the celebration of the Great Festivals.
70. None shall enter the Circle that have a sickness or an ailment which may be passed on to the Lady's other children -- for to do so causes harm to yourself, as well as to the others of the Circle. Rather should the Healers go unto the sick one, that through the love of the Gods they shall be made well and whole once more.
71. It has been judged lawful that if any of the Craft need a house, or land, and none will sell, to incline someone's mind so as to be willing to sell, providing it harms none and the full price is paid without haggling.
72. In the matter of quarrels or disputes between the members of the Circle, the High Priestess shall convene the Council, and inquire into the matter. The Council shall hear each person privately, and then both together. And they shall decide justly, not favoring one side nor the other.
73. If an agreeable resolution cannot be reached, then that Wiccan must leave the Circle, for a Circle of Light cannot be properly formed where there is disagreement and discord. And when a Circle is not properly formed, the energy within is either dissipated, or turns ugly, festering like a hidden sore. So let them leave, but only with love in their hearts and yours, for even though your paths may div- erge, you are still all children of the Wicca, and there must be no violence between us. Bear no grudges, hold no thoughts of vengeance, for this will rot away the foundation of your power.
74. It has ever been recognized that there are some people who can never agree to work under any others. At the same time there are also people who cannot rule justly. To those who must ever be chief there is but one answer: "Void this Circle, and seek another one, or if ye be of sufficient rank, then form a Circle of your own." To those who cannot rule justly, the answer shall be "Those who cannot bear your rule will leave you." For none may come to Circle with those with whom they are at variance, for to do so angers the Gods, and hinders the Craft.
75. Those that do wrong without knowlege shall be held innocent; those that do wrong through carelessness shall be judged lacking in wisdom, and dealt with according to the nature of the transgression. Those who do wrong with deliberation and forethought shall be thrice punish- ed, and the Lords of Karma shall lay low their pride.
76. Each person must make a balance for their words and actions, and the judgements of the Elders should incline to try to make good come from the injustice or wrong-doing. Many are the ways to restore the balance, so let the judgements of the Elders and the Priestess be in keeping with this.
77. Do not turn aside those who seek the ways of the Wicca for the want of an offering or the lack of a robe. You are the servants of the Gods, and the servants of Their people, and those that seek for the Gods you must aid in their quest.
78. Of those who would inquire as to the ways of the Goddess, or who wish to become of the Wicca, ye shall search their hearts, and even into their spirits you shall look, as you are able. For the Wicca do not look to acquire mere numbers. Let none be turned away if their hearts are true, and their desire earnest.
79. The hidden children are like the strings of a harp: each one may give a clear note, and when gathered together in sympathy and accord, they shall give rise to a beautiful symphony. Yet when struck without reason or thought, these notes may cause discord or disharmony. Therefore the Gods decree to Their Teachers and Priests that all must be taught to master their harp, and to pluck their strings with care, that they cause no discord or imbalance.
80. Choose the Priests and Teachers of the Wicca with diligence and with care. The qualities that you should search for within them are Faith, Belief, Knowledge, Ability, Patience, Leadership, Humility, and a loving nature -- for they must lead and teach the children of the Goddess, and will thereby have the power to do great good, or to cause great imbalance.
81. In practice it should be that the greatest of the Priests and Priestesses should guide the rituals within each of the Temples of the Old Gods, and truly you should be content with the advice and guidance given by them. Yet ever it should be given so that it is clear and understandable, for within the Temple each of the Wicca is free, and thus they should be able to recognize and to understand our ways and their implications. And those who cannot explain the inner workings, or give just cause and reason for their decisions, may be questioned, or the wisdom of the advice weighed.
82. Let the Priestess and Priest lead as long as they are able, and their leadership be wise and strong, and to the benefit of the Wicca. Yet if their health is ill-favored, or if the next generation needs to try their hand, then let them have the vision and the wisdom to step away from their position, and pass the duties of the Circle t o another. Let them not become overly attached to the office, nor too fond of the power.
83. If a Priestess or a Priest should tire of their duties and char- ges, then they may step down, but only after having trained and acknowledged a successor. If a Priest or Priestess deserts their Circle, then they have lost the right to ever lead again within this life, so great a trust they have broken. If they should return to the Circle within one turn of the Wheel, and are judged to have true atonement in their hearts, new insight and growth, then they may be forgiven, and allowed to return to the Circle, yet they shall worship only, and hold no office or title. Leadership is a sacred commitment and an honor, and they have shown that they cannot be trusted with such responsibility.
84. Any Priestess, Priest, or Elder who consents to a breach of the Laws regarding the use of the Craft to cause harm to others must immediately be relieved of their office, for it is the lives of the children of the Goddess which they endanger, as well as the honor of the Craft.
85. The High Priestess may take a Sabbatical from her Circle, if her personal life and duties require it, for up to a year and a day. During that time, the Maiden shall act as High Priestess. If the High Priestess does not return at the end of a year and a day, then the Initiates of the Circle shall name a new Priestess. Unless there is good reason to the contrary, the person who has done the work of the Priestess should reap the reward. If someone else is named, then the Maiden should continue in that office.
86. Each Priestess and Priest shall choose their own consorts, yet let them be wise in the learning of our people, and thus others shall abide by the wisdom of their choice. Yet if the Circle feels the decision is ill-advised, or that they cannot abide and work in honor and trust with that consort, then they may request a gathering of all concernted to meet and to talk, and to resolve the balance with love and honor. For only those who are pure and strong, keen and wise, patient and loving, can effectively and properly carry out the duties of a Keeper of the Circle.
87. Those of the Priesthood shall not neglect their mates, or their children, or their house, nor anything which is in their possession; nor shall the sick and the needy be neglected for the sake of the Circle. Therefore let them adjust the one thing against the other, that neither should suffer, and that which is given by the Gods is treated with love and respect.
88. Long ago, at the time of Creation, it was deemed that the female should hold the power of life-giving. And such was the male force drawn to the love and beauty of the Creation of life, that he sur- renders unto her keeping the force of his powers in the furtherance of life. Yet the Priestess must always remember that the fuel of the flames which light the fires within her Temple comes from the Priest. Thus she must use the force wisely, and only with love, and she must honor and respect he who is the activator of the Life Force.

Pagan tradition begins the wheel of the year on Samhain, the Celtic New Year. This date is the time when the veils between the worlds of the living and the dead are thinnest. It is a time for visitations and scrying the future. This is a cross-quarter festival of the Celts.
Samhain is a final harvest festival. At this time the horned god, the god of cattle and wild creatures, dies as the cattle are slaughtered. The Celts understood that life cannot exist without death and honored the passing of the life given to sustain theirs during the long, cold months of winter when starvation stalks the land
The God enters the underworld, much as Arthur Pendragon went off to the Summerlands at the conclusion of the Arthurian legend. The horned god, however, is reborn at Yule as the Sun/Son God, something Christianesque Arthur never managed.
Cottagers set places at the table for those who'd gone ahead to the Summerlands in order to honor their dead. Young people costumed themselves in order to protect themselves from whatever malevolent spirits or fairies might be about. They entered the night, going from door to door in order to receive the largess of the householder.
As this is the time of the apple harvest, cakes and soft and hard cider flowed freely. Those cottagers who provided largess were blessed and wished well. Those who were stingy and unwilling to provide for the revelers were considered cursed by the Gods and all manner of misfortune was believed would befall them during the depths of the winter.
Today Samhain is popularly known as Halloween. Christian churches claimed it as their own and named it "All Souls Day" or "All Saints Day," moving the date to November 1. Mexican culture and tradition identifies this date as "The Day of the Dead" and they celebrate it with a mixture of pagan and Roman Catholic ritual.
Modern pagans consider Samhain a time of endings and beginnings. It is considered the time the God enters the Summerlands prior to his rebirth at Yule. It is a time to release all old problems and look forward to what the future brings. Many pagans scry using various methods - tarot, runes, scrying mirrors, or crystal balls, to name a few.
Winter Solstice is commonly called referred to as the celebration of Yule. The word Yule is said to have come from the Norse word "Jul" or "Yul", meaning wheel.
Solstice celebrations have been around a long, long time. From the time mankind observed the days lengthened after midwinter there was an understanding something significant had just occurred. Without thelengthening of the days winter would last forever and humankind would die.
Following that line of reasoning, it makes sense evergreens would be considered sacred reminders of everlasting life. During the depths of the worst winters evergreens, in the form of holly, mistletoe, andvarious forms of conifer were a beacon of hope to a cold weary world. Life springs eternal!
One of the earliest stories in this regard dates back to ancient Sumer. Ishtar and Nimrod produced a son named Tammuz. While still a child, Tammuz was attacked by a wild beast and died. The grievingIshtar cut down a tree at the base, ordering a new one to grow from the stump, in commemoration of her lost son. After the new tree grew a bit she cut it off and repeated the process. In this manner the first evergreen was formed. This legend was adopted by the followers of Mithras and subsequently by the followers of Christ.
O Tannenbaum is one of the oldest songs in existence today. Tannenbaum is a word compounded from two Germanic words - Tinne, which means holly and glast-tin, which means evergreen tree. It is likelyTannenbaum refers to a species of evergreen oak sacred to a Sun God. The word tannin has a common origin and tannin is an acid found in the leaves and bark of oak that has long been used in the tanning process.
The ancient Druids believed mistletoe to be an indicator of great sacredness. When it was found growing upon an oak tree, an uncommon occurrence, it was considered a sign of the great sanctity of thetree. Legend has it mistletoe was cut only at summer and winter solstice by way of a Druid elder climbing the tree. He cut the mistletoe with a golden sickle. It fell into a cloth held below the tree by other members of his order, as it would have profaned the mistletoe to fall upon the ground. There is also legend mistletoe was cut only on the 6th night of the moon.
Druids reportedly believed the berries of the mistletoe represented the sperm of the Gods. When pressed, a semen like substance issues from the white berries. Mistletoe was considered a magickal aphrodisiac. Girls standing under a sprig of mistletoe were asking for a bit more than a kiss, it seems.
While highly toxic when ingested, it was believed by the Druids and many in the subsequent culture in the British Isles that mistletoe was a curative for everything from infertility to epilepsy. Sir James Frazer, in his epic work, "The Golden Bough" relates tales of actual ingestion of this plant. Cattle were given branches of mistletoe for being the first of the year to bear a calf. Women ingested it to cureinfertility. The folk name for mistletoe "heal all" and has been for a thousand years. In that form it is taken in a very dilute tea.
The Roman Saturnalia was a solstice celebration of note. Ten days and nights long, friends and family gathered for great feasts and an exchange of presents. We continue these customs today relatively unchanged - the exception being the reversal of status of slaves and masters as one hopes today's neopagans have no slaves.
Most ancient cultures celebrated Yule for longer than a day. In fact, the solstice is two to three days long in terms of astronomical length of day, something the ancients undoubtedly noted in their astronomicalobservations.
The Swedish people celebrated Midvinterblot, which means, "mid-winter-blood" before the advent of Christianity. Winters were long and harsh and their Viking ancestors made blood sacrifice to theGods, asking them to allow winter to pass. To this day the word used for this season is Jul, and the Jul gnome is an important part of Christmas - moreso than Christmas father or the Christchild.
The Norse celebrated Yule for twelve or thirteen nights. During that time the Gods and Goddesses were considered closest to Midgard. The deities were referred to as "Yule-beings," a title that survived amongthe Lapps until at least 1674. Yule was the season the dead returned to Earth, sharing feasts with the living. Elves, trolls and other magickal beings roamed freely, coming into homes in friendship andpeace when invited.
The antiquity of 24 hour fires or burning of actual logs on the night of the solstice stretches back to the time of the Roman Saturnalia and legend has it Egyptians burned logs in a similar fashion around thesolstice. As a form of sympathetic magick it would make sense to encourage the Sun God to burn brightly, returning to the world, by burning a log all night.
In the British Isles and in Gaulic Europe Solstice usually included a Yule log. This was anything from a large tree to a log that would fit into the hearth. The log was anointed with wine, salt, holly andother evergreens, then set alight - sometimes by young girls who had saved bits of last year's log, sometimes by their mothers.
Some logs were burned outside while the people reveled. In some climates the celebrations moved indoors, where it became more familial in nature. Some traditions required the log be put to one side of thehearth so that it would burn only a tiny bit each day and last the entire year. Other traditions required burning the log to ashes over a 24-hour period. In all cases the ashes were considered sacred -some believed them to be a protection against lightning, others against evil.
Various traditions used different types of wood for Yule logs - birch, oak, and willow are named as well as holly.
Later this practice devolved into the Yule candle, a large candle that burned a full 24 hours. Today many pagans use Yule candles in lieu of Yule logs as most homes and apartments do not come equipped withhearths.
Most often, today's Yule log is found most often in the form of a pastry, a rolled cake dusted with chocolate shavings and garlanded with green frosting to appear like the original.
Santa Claus aka "That jolly old elf" is a multicultural synthesis of god figures transmitted through time and amalgamated into the Christmas card character of today. Santa embodies the characteristicsof many gods. Aspects of Santa can be found in:
Saturn, whose name was used in the word Saturnalia and was a Roman agricultural God.
Cronos, a Greek God known as Father Time, who was associated with theturning of the solar year - these days depicted arriving as Baby New Year to relive the careworn Old Year.
The Holly King, a Celtic God of the dying year who in turn gave way to the OakKing during atremendous battle that determined if the year would, indeed, progress to spring.
Odin is known in Norse by the title "Jolnir" which means, "Jul-One."
Tomte, a Norse Land Spirit, bestowed presents on children.
Even the reindeer pulling Santa's sleigh can be viewed as a pagan manifestation - that of the god Herne, the Celtic Horned God. Certainly the use of horned animals is reflected in the legend of Thor, the Norse God, who rode a chariot pulled by goats through the heavens.
From the mists of unrecorded history has come to us the legend of the Great Mother Goddess giving birth to the Sun/SonGod. This legend has been retold countless times, the most recent being the birth of JesusChrist. Earlier tellings of the birth of the Sun God include the birth of the God Horus by the Goddess Isis, and the God Mithras - either by his mother or by a stone - take your choice. The Norse referred tothe first night of Yule was referred to as "Mothernights." Female ancestral spirits were honored and Frigga was worshipped.
Holly was incorporated into Solstice festivities early. As an evergreen plant it signified everlasting life, the triumph of life over killing winter. It is used during Yule celebrations as boughs over doorways and in wreaths. The divinities associated with it include the Holly King, Old Nick, Saturn, Bacchus, Wood Spirits and the Holly Boys. It is associated with Roman, Celtic, and English Solstice traditions and has been adopted by Christians as a part of their celebrations.
Holly's bright red berries have long been associated with drops of blood and were related to the blood of Mithras long before legend related them to the blood of Christ shed when crowned by thorns.
A decoction of holly was considered a cure for worms in old England. But usually Holly was considered a luck bringer. It was hung in the stable or cow barn as a way to favor the animals. A holly tree planted next to a house protected against lightning and evil spells directed against the owner.
In Wales it was considered unlucky to bring holly into the house before December 24. To do so could cause quarrels and domestic upheavals. Anyone who burned green holly or squashed the berries wasinviting disaster. Brighid is an Irish Goddess who is described as Brighid and her two sisters named Brighid. She is the Goddess of fire and patroness of the fires of the forge. As such she is associated with the waxing of the light (fires of the sun) as well as with war (forging swords). As the Goddess of poetry she is associated with Bards (an order of Druid) and rulers, as bards were considered only slightly less important than kings in Ireland. As the Goddess of healing Brighid was the patroness of the midwife, called upon to insure fertility of barren women, called upon to insure the safety of pregnant women as well as the health of the people in general.
Brighid is associated with the milking of the Dun Cow. This is associated with calving and the coming of new life into the world. She is also associated with the birthing of lambs and the mother's milk of the ewes. In this manner she is associated with the color white - the color of mother's milk. Farmers would call on Brighid to bless his cattle just as women would call upon her to bless them with children.
Another association between Brighid and the color white is the association of Brighid the Bride. As a tripart Goddess Brighid contains within her the aspects of Maiden, Mother, and Crone. Whether Brighid is three individuals or one individual who manifests all three aspects, the Brighid who is associated with Imbolc is Brighid the Maiden. At Imbolc Brighid the Mother steps aside so that Brighid the Maiden can assume her place as the lover of the young God.
It is unknown if purity was valued highly among the ancient Celts. They were, after all, an Aryan people and Aryans are patriarchal in nature as is evidenced by the chances in the Hindu pantheon due to the Aryan invasion. Whether this branch of Aryans was patriarchal in nature is open to dispute considering the highly independent nature of Scots women. At any rate, the color white, (a Christian color denoting purity) has come to be associated with Brighid the bride. At this time of year it is common to wrap up the corn dolly created the previous Lammas and display her as Brighid the bride, presiding over the early part of the year.
There are those who celebrate this time as the true marriage of the God and Goddess, pointing out that there is not enough time between Beltane and Yule for a pregnancy to come to terms. However, the Gods and Goddesses need not follow mortal convention in this manner. Additionally, the birth is a metaphor for the return of the sun/Son God in astrological terms.
At Lammas the Corn Mother/Goddess is consider to have entered her waning period. During this time a Corn Mother Doll is placed in a trunk where she will await her return as the Corn Maiden at Imbolc. (I use a sheaf of corn, but others may actually make corn dollies.) During this time of rest she rejuvinates herself. (Sadly, this does not account for her taking time out to give birth in Yule, a problem of combining Druidic and Celtic festivals into a united whole.)
At Imbolc one takes the Corn Maiden, wraps her in her bridal finery, including white cloth, ribbons, lace, and jewellery denoting the Goddess. She is displayed as the Bride, sometimes known as Brighid the Bride. She is laid in a basket, her bridal bed, and a wand (symbol of the God) adored with ribbons and flowers, is laid across her.
In Scandinavian countries a crown of lighted candles implanted in a wreath of holly was worn by a maiden of the household during the Imbolc celebrations. In some covens this tradition is carried on today. One assumes they are careful of burns from candle wax!
Another tradition is to leave a sliced of buttered bread upon the butter churn in honor of the Goddess. She is associated with milk and the making of butter (hence an association with both white and gold/yellow).
It is at sunrise on Imbolc that the Holly wreath of Yule is replaced by three ears of corn as a symbol of the tripart Goddesses return to the world of man.
There are many other associations with this season. The story of Snow White is a personification of Maiden, Mother, and Crone. Skin as white as snow (maiden), Lips as red as blood (mother), hair as black as ebony (crone) that hark to the descent of the Goddess into the underworld and her rebirth to the world of man.
The term Imbolc means "in the belly." This clearly refers to the pregnancy of the Earth Mother with life as yet unseen. Just as a woman in the early months of pregnancy does not display the new life within her for all to see, so does the apparently barren Earth nurture life within her soil, awaiting the right time to bring forth new life. Snow is white; snow covers much of the Earth at this time, and is associated with Brighid. Sunlight is perceived as yellow as the sun (Sun God) passes overhead. This holiday is also associated with the color yellow, from the sun, as well as the color of churned milk (butter).
Oimelc is also associated with Imbolc. This is a term that means "milk of the ewes" and is clearly associated with Brighid bringing forth the lambs in spring and the milk of their mothers. As mentioned early, ewe's milk is white and the color is associated with Brighid.
The great torch light parades and the candlelight processions of later (Christian) times relate both to the growth of the light of the sun and honoring the fire Goddess who brings life and warmth to the world.
Unable to do away with the worship of the Great Goddess, Brighid, Christianity absorbed her into their pantheon of Saints as St. Brigit. St. Brigit is credited as being the foster mother of Jesus Christ. She is also invoked in the blessings of sacramental candles for the church. This harks back to the making of candles during the time of the Imbolc celebrations. The Great Goddess is also honored for her healing through the early Christian custom of blessing the throats of parishioners with the candles blessed the previous day. Ostara, also known as Eostar, Eostre and the Festival of Trees, Alban Eilir, is the Vernal Equinox, that occurs between March 19th and March 23rd, generally around March 21st in the Northern Hemisphere.
Ostara is a time of balance. At the time the solar ecliptic crosses equator days and nights are perfectly in balance in terms of hours. It is said that at the equinox an egg can be balanced on end easily.
Ostara is also a time that heralds new beginnings, new life. It is the second of the fertility festivals. By the time we celebrate Ostara the deeply hidden stirrings of life reverenced during Imbolc are inchoate, green plant tips peeping from winter hiding places.
This is the time of the return of the vegetation God who gave His life in the autumnal harvest in order to preserve our lives during the long, dark times of winter. By now most of the flour has been used, most of the ales drunk, and most of the dried meats consumed. As if by magick, the grains rise from the fields where winter wheat was sown, animals emerge from their wintry dens, and farm animals begin the lambing, calving and egg-laying seasons.
The virginal (unmarried) Goddess of Imbolc, who welcomed the young Sun God's attentions will now conceive the child to be born at the next Winter Solstice. In Christian mythology this is the time of year Mary is informed by an angel that she has been impregnated by deity. Some pagan traditions move the date of impregnation to Beltane, a far milder time for romping in the fields.
Christians have designated the first Sunday after the first full moon following the Vernal equinox as Easter Sunday, the date identified as the resurrection of Christ. Yet long before Christ, in ancient Egypt, this time of year commemorated the return of Osiris from the land of the dead. And before the Egyptians honored the return of Osiris the Sumerians celebrated the return of Tammuz, the grain god, from the land of the dead - a passage hard won by Ishtar. The Phoenicians celebrated the return of Adonis, another name for Tammuz. Later, Dionysus became a God of resurrection, in both the Greek and Roman traditions.
Eostre, a Germanic Goddess, is associated with both spring and sunrise. Tradition has it that Eostre, saved a bird whose wings were frozen from the harsh winter by turning it into a magickal, egg laying hare. Eostre was a maiden whose aspects of renewal and rebirth brought about the reappearance of bright spring flowers, baby chickens fresh from the shell, baby bunnies from their winter dens and the reoccurrence of the plow in the field. In some European traditions flowers grew from her footprints.
Pagans lit new fires at dawn to cure ills, renew life and protect the new crops. In some cultures this sacred day included the ringing of bells, singing of songs, and decorating of hard boiled eggs. Eggs were a symbol of both the sun god (the golden yolk) and fertility (the white shell symbolizing the White Goddess) and were used both as talismans and eaten in ritual. The eggs of wild birds were gathered and these eggs are recreated today with the dyes used in Eastercelebrations. The weaving of Easter baskets harks back to the weaving of birds' nests, a necessity prior to egg laying and the continuation of the life cycle.
Equinox is an ideal time to clean your home and welcome the new season. More than physical cleaning, it is a time to remove negative energies and problems that have built up over the winter months. A common belief is that all cleaning/scrubbing should be done in a clockwise motion to fill the home with energy for growth.
Beltane is the traditional marriage of the God and Goddess. Celebrated on May 1st, it is one of the cross quarter festivals. The marriage of the God and Goddess was the only marriage sanctioned during the month of May during ancient pagan times. Only divine marriages, including those of kings, could be "sanctified" during May. Others had to wait until June, which is where the tradition of the June bride comes from.
In some traditions Beltane is the time when the God to be is conceived. However, there is not time for a full gestation between Beltane and Yule. Others think that the actual coming together of the God and Goddess is at the Vernal Equinox. However, when it comes to mortal gestation it would seem unlikely the spirits are bound by human limitations.
Beltane is the time of the ripening Earth and the gay May flowers. In many parts of Europe and in parts of the New World as well, the Maypole, a phallic symbol, is erected and danced in a sunward (deosil) motion.
The Maypole itself is traditionally of Oak (a sacred tree of the Druids) and decorated with Hawthorne wreaths. The ribbons of the Maypole signify the softness of the Mother as the Maypole itself symbolizes the God. The ribbons are of many colors and in some traditions each color has significance. When the dancers chose a ribbon it is not uncommon for them to announce, "I dance red, for romance." or "I dance green for good fortune." As the dancers weave and twine the ribbons around the Maypole a cone of power is raised and their wishes are bound tightly into that cone.
Traditionally, the last woman left holding a ribbon is crowned Queen of the May. She is identified with the Goddess.
There are a variety of methods of choosing the Oak King or King of the May. Often he is the man who is able to toss a wreath high enough and accurately enough to "ring" the Maypole. In other traditions he is the last man holding a ribbon after dancing the Maypole. Yet other traditions the King is selected by the Queen to be her consort. The King symbolizes the Sun God.
In times past the royal couple consummated their marriage in the fields, to bring new life to the Earth. In these times it is common for them to share a loving cup. If they wish to consummate their spiritual marriage they, of course, may do so - however, it is more likely that this will happen if they are a married couple and there is a quiet place nearby. The new life they engender is as likely to be new intellectual life as actual life.
As with all children conceived at festivals, children who are born nine months after a Beltane festival are considered gifts of the Gods and are referred to as "Merry Be Gots."
In many parts of Europe, the Maypole was believed to increase fertility of women and cattle. Infertile women would embrace oaks on May Day with east and west producing different sexes of children. Other cultures deemed rolling under the ground under an apple tree a fertility enhancer. A bough fastened to one's home was believed to help cattle produce more milk.
The name means "good fire", and bonfires were once used to mark the symbolic return of the sun and renewed life. The Celtic god Bel (meaning "Lord" ) was known as "The Bright One" and was a god of light and fire. Beltane is also known as Cetsamhain and is directly opposite Samhain in terms of the wheel of the year.
Beltane is a fire festival. Great fires are lit honoring the fertility God Belenos. Some leap the fires to show the exuberance of the season. It is believed that leaping the fire and declaring one's desire or intentions will help seal the outcome of what is wished for.
The fire itself was made of nine different kind of woods. The number nine is a sacred number, representing the triple Goddess three times over. The woods included birch for the Goddess, oak for the God, fir for birth, willow for death, rowan for magick, apple for love, grapevine for joy , hazel for wisdom, and hawthorn for purity.
In times long past the young people of the villages and towns would go into field and forest on May Eve, gather flowers and bedeck themselves, their homes and families. They would return to their villages the following day and gift each home with flowers. In turn they received the best food and drink each cotter had to offer. The revelers would bless the fields and flocks of those who were generous to them, in a similar manner to those well-gifted on Samhain.
Customs associated with Beltane include skimming water from the top of a wealthy person's well in order to bring luck. The battle of the Oak King and Holly King occurs at this festival, with each fighting for the love of the Goddess. The Oak King wins and presides until Samhain when the Holly King wins as Lord of the waning year. Midsummer, Litha, Summer Solstice. All these terms are used to describe that one day in the year when the sun has reached its zenith upon Earth.
Our pagan ancestors were often too far from astronomical observatories such as Stonehenge to be able to plot the exact time of the solstice. So, as with most religions, a date was decided upon and adhered to from year to year.
While present day pagans tend to plot the solstice with accuracy and plan a festival around the date (usually holding it on a weekend), our ancestors considered June 24th to be the solstice. And, in fact, many European pagan traditions continue to use the evening of the 24th as the date on which the solstice is celebrated.
There are two modes of thought about summer solstice. One is that the Sun God not only reaches the height of his power upon this date, but that he is also killed by his alter ego. Therefore the Holly King and the Oak King are believed to battle on the date of the Oak King's ascendancy. Following this line of reasoning, the Holly King and the Ivy King would do battle on Yule.
The second line of thought on the summer solstice is that the solstice is the ascendancy of the Sun God. The actual battle between the Holly King and the Oak King takes place not at solstice but at the Autumnal Equinox just as the battle between the Holly King and the Ivy King takes place at the Vernal Equinox.
My thought processes more closely align with the second version of events. It would only be at the time of the Autumnal and Vernal Equinoxes when the hours of sunlight and darkness are approaching equality, then passing over into imbalance again. Certainly our ancestors viewed this as a time of significant transition - a time when the forces of the universe were fighting over dominance as summer transitioned into winter.
As the flowers of spring herald Beltane, the flowers of the summer bring us into the full appreciation of Midsummer. The flower most closely associated with this time of year is the white bloom of St. John's Wort. It should be noted that St. John, the predecessor of Jesus, has been often represented as a satyr like man in medieval artwork. This reflects the deep association of the Pagans turned nominal Christians in the continuation of the conflict between the elements of light and dark, feast and famine, warm and cold, etc. Jesus, born at Yule, was associated with Llew, while St. John, born at Midsummer, was associated with Goronwy.
Other plants/herbs associated with Midsummer and used in amulets or for medicinal purposes were: Rowan - protection against evil magic, Rue - protection against poison and disease, Vervain - dispelling negativity, Woodbine - protection and healing, Mistletoe - protection, Fern seed - invisibility, Plantain - mending broken bones, Stime - mental stimulant, Stinging Nettle - stopping bleeding, Apple - health, Thyme - aids digestion, Fennell - aids digestion, Houseleek - romance divination, and Feverfew - reduces inflamation.
Types of wood used for the Midsummer fire include: St. John's Wort, Rue, Vervain, Mistletoe, and Lavender. Also included in the fire were: Feverfew flowers, pansy, and clover.
Also associated with the Solstice are the Cauldron of Cerridwyn and the Spear of Llew. Both have their fertility associations - the Cauldron brewing up life, the Spear the impregnating factor.
This is also a time when the fairy are about, moreso than any other sabbat save Samhain. If one wishes to see the little people one can smear fern pollen across one's eyes. Rue is carried in the pocket to ward off enchantment by the little people or, if rue is not available, wearing one's clothing inside out is another remedy which renders one unrecognizable to them.
Symbols common to this season include the solar cross, summer cut mistletoe (sans berries) and fires kindled of oak and fir. Snakes were which even Merlyn sought for its magickal properties. Midsummer is a time when the very first fruits of the harvest appear - the first strawberries, the early herbs are available for gathering. It is a time of promise, yet it is not the time of the harvest - lambs are born but not ready for the slaughter, wheat is growing tall but has not yet matured.
Much can turn a year of plenty into a year of privation even at this point in the cycle. So, while Midsummer is filled with the expectation of plenty, it is still not assured. There are nature spirits to be encouraged to produce and there are offerings to be made. Protection of the largess of the land is to be applied whenever possible.
Lughnassad, also known by the Christian name of Lammas, is typically celebrated on August 1st, although some traditions adhere to a date closer to the actual cross quarter date. For instance, this year the actual cross quarter date was August 6th.
Lughnassad is the first harvest of the year. It is the time when the grain is ripening and is most closely associated with that, historically. However, in modern times other fruits and vegetables are ripening - peaches, pears, tomatoes, summer squash, lettuce, and many other delectables we enjoy on our plates. It is a time when we rejoice in the plenty now available to us before the second and third harvests begin in earnest.
Lughnassad is a time of beginnings and of endings. This is the time of the year in Celtic culture, particularly in Ireland, when marriages were arranged. Young people without partners attended gatherings to seek betrothals. These betrothals were for a year and a day, giving the young couples time to determine if this marriage would bring forth offspring and if they were compatible. These handfastings appear remarkably close to Wiccan handfastings, and were reported as late as the 15th century.
This is also the time of year when the God Lugh mourned the death of his beloved foster mother, Taillte, and her passing into the underworld.
In other cultures the first harvest is associated with Goddesses such as Demeter, Ceres, Corn mother and various other agricultural Goddess such as Baba Yaga. The God manifests as Lugh, John Barleycorn, and a variety of other vegetation Gods.
Lughnassad lends itself to prosperity magick. As we reap the bounty of the Mother Earth we can draw good fortune to ourselves by creating a corn dolly from the first grain to honor the Great Mother. Or, one can bake a cake of the first grains and give a portion of it back to the Earth with thanks for her bounty.
Lughnassad lends itself to agricultural festivals including corn and apple festivals. Those who live in rural areas may be fortunate enough to find themselves near such a festival. If not, many county fairs are operational at this time of year and one can draw great appreciation for the fecundity of our Mother while strolling through displays of fruits, vegetables, grains, and animals. Additionally, this was historically the time of craft fairs with gaily-decorated booths dotting the ancient agricultural festival sites.
As with all pagan holidays these were days of joy and a rare day off from the daily toil our ancestors faced. Plays were held, dances brought villagers together, reveling commenced at sunset and continued through the night.
As most of our pagan ancestors were closely bound to the Earth it was virtually impossible for the Christian religion to stamp out the old ways. Instead, as with most pagan festivals, these celebrations were Christianized. In this case, the holiday was converted to Lammas. Lammas means "Loaf Mass" for it was the day the first loaves from the first harvest were laid on the altar as offerings to the Christian god.
Mabon is the second of the harvest festivals. Also known as Harvest Home, it is the time the spirit of vegetation sacrifices itself so that we may live. It is a happy time, one of plenty and comfort, when people assure themselves there is enough to see them through the coming winter.
Mabon is an equinox festival, the day half way between the solstices. It is a time of balance, a time when light and day are equal. However, most ancient pagans were not astronomers and therefore the date was fixed on September 25th. More often, today, the celebrations are held closer to or on the actual date of the equinox.
Just as the God of Light defeated the God of Darkness at Ostara, so does the God of Darkness vanquish the God of Light at this time of year, creating balance and the changing of the seasons.
Harvest home is the end of the hardest work of the year. The crops are gathered in. The nights become colder, yet the days have not yet assumed the chill of winter. It is the day autumn commences and leads us towards the depth of Yule and the rebirth of the sun king.
Decorations at this time of year include the cornucopia, the horn of plenty, filled to overflowing with the fruits of the year. Certainly this is a sympathetic magick symbol of the largess of the Mother.
The Goddess appears in her guise as Mother Bountiful, Mother Land and Queen of the Harvest. The God is seen as Mabon, Sky Father, Corn King, and the Lord of the Harvest. The Lord and Lady reign over the celebrations of thanksgiving which begin at sunset and continue through the night.
Christians mistakenly associated this time with sacrifice. There was, indeed, sacrifice, but that of the plants and animals who gave themselves to feed the people thoughout the balance of the year.
In an effort to stamp out Mabon the early Christian church changed the name of this date to Michaelmass in honor of the Archangel Michael.
Modern pagans honor the gods by hanging corn as decorations, offering thanks to the gods for the bounty of the year, and celebrating beneath the harvest moon.
